Bush’s Big Bounce

Coming off the Republican National Convention in New York, the president pulls ahead of John Kerry by almost every measure

By Brian Braiker

Newsweek

Updated: 1:35 p.m. ET Sept. 4, 2004

Sept. 4 - Coming out of the Republican National Convention in New York, President George W. Bush now holds a 11-point lead over Democratic challenger Sen. John Kerry (52 percent to 41 percent) in a three-way race, according to the latest NEWSWEEK poll. The poll was taken over two nights, both before and after Bush’s acceptance speech. Respondents who were queried only on Friday, after Bush’s speech, gave the Republican a 16-point lead over Kerry.

The 11-point lead represents a 13-point bounce for Bush since an Aug. 5 to Aug. 10 poll conducted by Newsweek’s pollster, Princeton Survery Research Associates, for the Pew Research Center. The president’s post-convention bounce was substantial vs. the two-point increase received by Kerry after last month’s Democratic National Convention and in line with the size of other post-convention bounces...

This is the second poll to have an 11 point lead. We'll probably have a better idea next week after some of the other major polling firms (Zogby, Gallup, etc.) finish their polling. Rasmussen only shows Bush with a 4 point lead, but that's an 8 point swing from a few days before the convention.

i don't get the rasmussen poll...it says it's a 3-day running average...

and 2 days ago, it went from even to a 4-point lead for bush...indicating that the most recent day's polling would have to be greater than just 4 pts...right?

yet, the next 2 days' polling were also at 4 pts...meaning they had to be less than 4 pts. difference in order for the average to be 4 pts. all 3 days.

SO, if that's right, then the gap between bush & kerry should be closer than 4 pts. tomorrow (Sunday), if his numbers trend the way they have.

is this making any sense to anyone else???

hmmm???

Coinky Dink? I think not!

Teresa Heinz Kerry treated at Mercy-North Iowa, released

By JOHN SKIPPER, Of the Globe Gazette

MASON CITY — Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, was treated and released at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa Saturday night after becoming ill (after viewing recent polling numbers?)   during a campaign stop here earlier in the day.

Heinz Kerry, 65, was talking about health care issues with guests at the home of Steve Musson, 428 First St. S.E., Saturday afternoon when she stopped, put her hands to her head and said, “I don’t feel well,” according to Globe Gazette photographer Arian Schuessler. She then said something about her medication, Schuessler said.

An aide told the media, “cameras off.” In less than a minute, Schuessler said, Heinz Kerry regained her composure and resumed talking for about 45 minutes.

She and her entourage, including Secret Service agents, then headed for Mason City Municipal Airport for her departure on a twin-engine jet.

At the airport, Secret Service requested an ambulance so that her vital signs could be checked.

Mrs. Kerry, who had been in the plane, walked to the ambulance unassisted. She was transported to the hospital by the Mason City Fire Department Ambulance at about 6 p.m. She remained at the hospital for about three hours, undergoing routine tests after complaining of an upset stomach, according to a spokesman for the Kerry campaign.

Her plane took off from Mason City Municipal Airport at 9:09 p.m., headed to Heinz Kerry’s home in Pittsburgh.

Heinz Kerry was visiting her fourth Iowa city in two days. She had earlier stopped in Cedar Rapids, Davenport and Des Moines, talking about rising health care costs and shrinking coverage.

-- More on this story appears Sunday in the Globe Gazette and on Globe Online.

Is this Newsweek poll an accurate gauge of America? According to their own figures, of the 1,008 people surveyed 417 of the respondents came from military households. Is 41% of America in the military? That seems a bit of a stretch.

According to Rasmussen, as of Sunday, it's Bush leading by 1%

Typically, these surveys are weighted to account for regional and other factors. And the Newsweek one is the same as the Time one. We'll just have to see over the next few days and weeks.
