DKW 86 7,437
Navy grants fitness amnesty to 48,000 sailors who failed test Quote The test grades sailors, based on their age, on push-ups, sit-ups and a 1.5-mile run. When I was in, we had to do the Marine Corp PFT. 80 Sit Ups in under 2 minutes. 3-5 Pull-ups OR 35-40 Push-ups 3 mile Run in Under 28 Minutes. Has the entire world gone soft? Brad_ATX 13,654
Wonder if they had to lower standards just to keep people in the service. I believe recruitment numbers have been down for a while.
alexava 6,973
Dkw those numbers don’t seem too unreasonable. I can understand making exceptions but 48k? That’s a lot of dead weight.

I believe recruitment numbers have been down for a while. Can't tell it by my experience. The last two young men who have done part time work for me both joined the Navy. The first had regular jobs as a crossfit instructure before enlisting. (Boy, did the recruiters salivate over him.) He's scheduled for diving school. He had no problems with the physical demands, but I have warned him that the big challenge for him entering diving school will be mental. (He did mention there were a lot of hopeful recruits that were hopelessly out of shape.) The second - and current - just passed his MEPS and qualified as a submariner. He's a Boy Scout and is pretty fit. He goes in this July. I encouraged them both. They both plan to complete college degrees while in. Back to the original topic - I can imagine the Navy has a lot of skill positions that don't require good physical conditioning on a routine basis, but I can only hope that the aforementioned "amnesty" comes with a commitment to a fitness program. It's very hard to function under stress if you aren't in decent physical condition.
