4-star in-state LB Shemar James trims his list to 8

One of the top recruits in the state of Alabama for the class of 2022 has started to narrow things down.

Shemar James, a 4-star linebacker from Mobile (Ala.) Faith Academy, released a top eight via Twitter on Monday of Auburn, Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan and Texas A&M.

James, listed at 6-feet-3, 200 pounds, is the No. 8 recruit in Alabama and No. 108 prospect nationally for 247Sports. He recorded 10 tackles for loss, 6 sacks and 1 interception in 2020.

James doesn’t seem to be in any hurry to pick a school.

“First, I have to do visits,” he said. “I’m not going to commit without visits. Now that they’ve pushed those back, it’s probably going to be during the season when I commit.”

Of Auburn, he told Auburn Undercover recently, “They’re a big factor."

He added, “First off, it’s a home state school. And just the tradition at Auburn, the winning tradition. And the great academics. And I know a guy there now — Lee Hunter. I’ve known him since the seventh grade.”

According to James, head coach Bryan Harsin, defensive coordinator Derek Mason and inside linebackers coach Jeff Schmedding have talked to him a bunch and have made a strong early impression.

“They’re pretty genuine,” James said. “They like my ball skills, my IQ for the game and just the speed I have around the ball — the way I play sideline to sideline.”

James hasn’t yet visited Auburn. In fact, because of Covid-19 and the lengthy NCAA recruiting dead period, he has yet to visit anywhere. But he has had several virtual visits, including one with Auburn.

“It was awesome,” James said. “Their facilities are outstanding.”

Auburn’s new coaching staff has made an impression on four-star athlete Shemar James.

It also has a message: Auburn wants him. Auburn wants him badly.

“I hear from Auburn every day,” James said. “They are recruiting me very hard.”

James, from Faith Academy in Mobile, has heard from Auburn coach Bryan Harsin, defensive coordinator Derek Mason, area recruiter Zac Etheridge and inside linebackers coach Jeff Schmedding.

“I’ve talked to them all, but it’s mostly Coach Schmedding,” James said.

James is fine with it. He’s quickly developed a bond with Schmedding.

“Coach Schmedding, I really like him. He is awesome … awesome,” James said. “I like his consistency with me. He talks with me every day, sends me messages asking how I’m doing and stuff. He’s real straightforward with me, too.”

James has not visited Auburn, but he did experience a virtual visit last week. He liked everything he saw.

“It was awesome,” James said. “I liked the locker room, the dorms and the stadium. Everything was great.”

James recently released a top group, which included Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Michigan, Texas A&M, Georgia, Florida State and Florida. With the attention he’s received from Auburn, the Tigers are in the upper half of the group.

“Auburn, compared to other schools, is very high. I can say that,” James said. “They are close to the top. I like the tradition at Auburn. They are used to winning. It’s a great program. They have great development with their players. It’s just a great program with great tradition.”

James plans to be patient with his recruitment. The recruiting dead period is set to end May 31.

“I’m going to wait until the dead period ends,” James said. “I want to take visits.”

Rivals ranks James, who is 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, No. 215 in the Rivals250, No. 12 athlete in the 2022 class and No. 8 overall recruit in Alabama.

Feels great to finally be able to use this

I was wondering about this and curious if they showed our facilities or the rendition of the new complex.    I know ours are not awful, just dated and lacking when compared to top programs.
