SBC Secret List

Understand this will come up on this board. Many hurt people but nothing really surprising imo

Despite collecting these reports for more than 10 years, there is no indication that (Oldham and Boto) or anyone else, took any action to ensure that the accused ministers were no longer in positions of power at SBC churches," the report said.

As disgusting as it is that this happened it's not really surprising.

Churches are common places for pedophiles and sexual assaulters to congregate, not because of the Religion, but because Churches are mostly unregulated, self guided institutions built on faith and trust. There's very few places that an adult male can get such close, unmonitored contact with children and teens without raising suspension as in a Church organization.

Be it classes, private mentorship, confessions, camps, road trips, etc. Males are expected to take leadership roles in these situations and oftentimes these isn't the background checks or accountability or oversight in place to make sure any given individual isn't abusing their authority or position. And as has been proven over and over again you can't just rely on victims to come forward publicly with abuse allegations for a multitude of reasons.

What makes this situation so horrible is the SBC KNOWING about so many abuse allegations and situations and choosing not to do anything about them and to cover them up to save the reputation of their leaders and Churches. Telling victims that there's nothing they can do and to just pray about it is disgusting.

This list is hundreds of known cases and accusations. Just think of the hundreds or even thousands of other cases and abusers who aren't on the list and are still actively abusing their victims.

All Churches with young people and youth groups really have get on the ball about having some accountability and observation setup for their leaders and teachers. It sucks that you can't just trust people, especially Church leaders, on faith that they'll do the right thing but that's the reality of human nature and the world we live in.
