One part to this puzzle has become more and more obvious.  First world countries, for lack of a better word, will be forced to get involved in influencing the governments of many countries South of the border in order to improve the quality of life of the citizens of those countries and thereby reduce the numbers of migrants.  Ofcourse, no amount of colonial type power and influence will change the fact that the migrants can often come to the U.S., work a decade and provide for many many relatives back home due to the wages they can earn in the U.S. and Canada.

If Americans could go to Mexico, with no training or experience in a field, and be paid $100 per hour while providing their children a better education and more opportunities, Mexico would be invaded with American workers.

That's a big IF. Mexico taxpayers aren't as dumb as a lot ours.

I agree, it isn't the situation that exists, but that is the problem we are facing.  In addition to that, we literally begged people to come for 200 years.  Our immigration laws reflect that.  I agree that we aren't in the same environment today and that we need immigration reform, but until that takes place, we aren't going to see much change.  Another angle at tackling the problem is to focus on what is making them leave their country with only the clothes on their back to beg for a new start here.
