  • The world spent more money than ever on its militaries in 2022, a new report found.

  • The US spent $877 billion in 2022, which accounts for almost 40 percent of all spending.

  • By comparison, the US federal government allocated just $76.4 billion for education in 2022.

The world's governments are spending more money than ever on their militaries, a new report finds. And, to no one's surprise, the United States leads them all.

The United States spent a total of $877 billion on its military in 2022, according to a new report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, or SIPRI, which maintains a database on military spending around the world.

That's almost 40% of total global military spending and possibly as much as three times more than the second-biggest spender, China — though it's hard to know for sure how much China is spending.

"In 2022 the USA allocated $295 billion to military operations and maintenance, $264 billion to procurement and research and development, and $167 billion to military personnel," the report says.

By comparison, the US federal government allocated just $76.4 billion in discretionary spending for education that same year. That means the US federal government is spending more than 10 times as much on its military than it is on its education. While state and local municipalities also contribute money to education, the Biden administration has requested just $90 billion for education in 2024 and $842 billion for defense.

Total global military spending reached an all-time high in 2022, the report found. Governments shelled out about $2.24 trillion. That's a 3.7% increase from 2021, which was the biggest year-on-year increase in more than 30 years.

European countries saw the largest increases in spending, driven in large part by Russia's invasions of Ukraine in February last year. The report found that, in real terms, European military spending had returned to levels not seen since the Cold War.

"The continuous rise in global military expenditure in recent years is a sign that we are living in an increasingly insecure world," Nan Tian, a senior researcher at SIPRI, wrote in the report. "States are bolstering military strength in response to a deteriorating security environment, which they do not foresee improving in the near future."

April 25, 2023: This story has been updated to reflect that the education spending noted in this story is by the US federal government, and doesn't include funding on the state and local levels.

image.pngTreasury.gov has a lil difference in the numbers. Wonder if the yahoo writer was counting some of the VA services towards military?

Also education being 10x lower seems... incorrect.

But again, this is treasury.gov. He could have pulled stats from elsewhere.

It's too late for people like us Fifty.

But hopefully it can be turned around for my kids... at least my youngest kids.

And of course your great-great-great-great-great grandchildren too!

Comparing Education spending against Military spending at the federal level is like comparing Apples to Oranges.  Most Education is done at the state level and local ISD level not at the federal level. If you want to make the case that there is waste in military spending. I would agree with you as in just about every other area of the Federal government. I was raised as a Navy brat and as long as I can remember people I knew when I was younger and now who are either in the military or still associated with the military have talked about short sighted spending, waste, and other evils of the Military Industrial complex.  Congressmen pushing programs the military doesn't want because it is built in their District or state.

China is building up their Naval Fleet as we downsize ours. We have had cost overruns on Naval ships and had some new ships that when finished were decommissioned quicky because they didn't meet the needs they were supposedly designed for. We have issue but more on oversight and planning then just the dollars spent.

I certainly don't want to come across as not supporting education, because that's certainly not the case.  However, spending alone will not equate to education.  Teacher's unions and all sorts of trash related to political indoctrination (to either side) versus purely academic learning is pure waste.

Also, parents need to take a much more vocal role in supporting education versus defending the abhorrent behavior of their kids.   My children tell me about the way other kids behave in schools and its really disturbing.  This is also confirmed by my wife (who worked at a school until recently) and her teacher friends.   My kids keep saying if I did "X" at school you'd kill me.  I just reinforce just basic accountability and teach them to behave in a way that honors God, themselves and our family name.

Instead, kids are on their phones, and if the teachers discipline them, their parents are up there yelling at the administrators - pathetic.
