AU can't wait to state case for ranking

Thursday, September 07, 2006

Go ballistic. Launch a tirade against the abuse of the power ESPN supposedly has over college football. Fill up reporters' notebooks with a lecture on the injustice of the system. Offer a detailed explanation of a simple play-off plan.

Those are the reactions you expected - OK, hoped for - from Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville on Wednesday, when word reached him that Southern California had jumped Auburn in the AP Top 25.

Instead of burnt toast, however, we got milquetoast.

"Oh, it'll take care of itself," Tuberville said. "I've got more problems than the polls."

More problems than the polls?

Well, there is the fact that just about every offensive coach in the country is ready to string Tuberville up for his role on the NCAA Rules Committee and the decision to shorten games.

But we're talking about the polls, Tommy! Don't you remember 2004, and the outrage over an undefeated Auburn being left out of the BCS Championship Game in favor of Southern California and Oklahoma?

"Sure, but that was the end of the season," Tuberville said. "We've got a lot of games to go. You put that out of your mind and hope you've got a chance to complain at the end of the season."

Huh?

If 2004 taught us anything, it's that you can't wait until December to start making your case. Auburn began this season ranked No. 4 in the AP; USC was No. 6.

Auburn beat a bad Pac-10 team, Washington State, 40-14; USC beat a bad SEC team, Arkansas, 50-14.

Tiger walkers everywhere want to know what USC did that warranted leaping over Auburn.

"Well, they did win on the road," Tuberville said. "And they've been national champs two of the last three years. There's probably a lot of sentiment for the way they played."

The good news for Auburn is that the AP poll is not part of the BCS formula.

Right now, the only part of that formula that is out is the Coaches' Poll, where Auburn is No. 4, behind Ohio State, Texas and Southern Cal. Remember, Auburn started out No. 6 in the Coaches' Poll, and USC was tied with Notre Dame at No. 3, so Auburn actually moved up while the Trojans didn't move.

(The other major component of the BCS is the Harris Poll, which doesn't come out for several more weeks.)

So Auburn is close. Expectations are so high. And since the national championship is a popularity contest anyway, why not start hammering voters now?

This is no time to take the high road, Tommy. If 40 points scored on Washington State wasn't enough, then tell Al Borges he better hang 55 on Mississippi State this weekend.

"There's no doubt a lot of voters do look at scores," Tuberville said.

Aha! So Tuberville does have his eye on the big prize at the end, right?

"We'll just try to win the game," he said. "We're happy to be where we're at (in the polls). No one knows for sure right now if they're in the right spot. It'll all come out in the wash."

Yeah, well, just be careful that what comes out in the wash doesn't also go down the drain.
