Daily readers think school paying too much

The University of Alabama has a new head football coach, but most readers responding to The Daily’s online poll think the cost is too much.

The poll asked, “What’s an appropriate annual salary for a winning University of Alabama football coach?” and 281 people voted in the unscientific survey, which ended at 5 p.m. Thursday.

The results are all follows:

# Less than $360,000 — 76 votes, 27.05 percent.

# Mike DuBose level, $360,000 — 23 votes, 8.19 percent.

# Dennis Franchione level, $1 million — 46 votes, 16.37 percent.

# Mike Shula level, $1.65 million — 61 votes, 21.71 percent.

# Jackpot level, $4 million — 50 votes, 17.79 percent.

# More than $4 million — 25 votes, 8.9 percent.

“The key word here is ‘winner,’ ” wrote Bobby Matthews of Decatur in an e-mail. “I agree with the Jackpot level or more, as long as the compensation is related to winning. The compensation should be in a progressive amount over several years.

“The news should explain to the public that these large salaries do not come totally from taxpayers money. A large percentage comes from donations, TV, advertisers, etc.”

But Sandra Lowery of Decatur wrote, “Didn’t $aban state firmly he had no interest in or plans to come to Alabama?

How much is a man worth who so easily changes his mind and his word?

Perhaps the state of Alabama should attempt to get a professional team and not pretend it is college football.

Four million would pay for a lot of scholarships for college students.”

UGA semi-delt with this when Richt got his new contract.

Screw them....(at least in UGA's decision)....football brought in 60+ million dollars and the profits paid for numerous other sports at UGA

If $aban is VERY SUCCESSFUL at Alabama...the money in the end is worth it.

But, Richt's contract was nowhere near what $aban got was it? Also, going by the fact that you said it was his new contract, that meant it was not his initial contract offer to come to UG was it? $aban is all of a sudden the highest paid college coach in the nation and he has not won a game yet for UAT. Did Richt's contract pay him at the same level that alot of NFL teams pay their coach?

Yes but even when you double Richt's salary....and it is near $5 mil with incentives....as long as Richt stays successful...the football program is bringing in ridiculous money with profits that support numerous programs that lose money yearly.

IMO, it helps a LOT

Define VERY SUCCESSFUL. He's still in the SEC West and has AU, LSU & Arky ahead of him. Ole Miss is improving each year and even MSU beat them this year. uat under any coach will be hard pressed to win the Division much less the SEC, yet you got Finebaum playing to the idiot dirt-roaders predicting $aban to win the MNC in the next 4 years. Sorry, ain't gonna happen -- not without AU, LSU & Arky all doing a complete fold-o in the next 4 years. So, maybe he sells more uat merchandise than Shulla did. Big deal. The real money is in the big BCS bowl games and I just don't see uat making it up there with a perennial 3 losses each year.
