  1. He needed to take GA from a mediocre also ran to a juggernaut. Kirby is a great coach. We could have had him, but much like the arguments for Kiffin now, everyone wanted Gus b/c they believed he was some kind of offensive genius b/c of what Cam Newton did in 2010. I'm not saying that Kiffin is a terrible coach .. I'm saying he's not an elite coach. He'll win a lot of games, and rack up a lot of yards. He won't build a powerhouse at Auburn. I want the powerhouse.
  2. Because the arguments being made for Kiffin now are strikingly similar to those that were made for Gus. Yet, Kiffin's record is actually inferior to Gus's!
  3. I'm not asserting that he wouldn't win at all. Quite the opposite. He would win a lot of games at Auburn, but he's not an elite coach who will build Auburn into a powerhouse. The standard is not to take a team that is at rock bottom and just bounce off the bottom. The standard is juggernaut .. not just being better than rock bottom or even winning a lot of games, but fielding a team that is a legit championship contender every season! Kiffin hasn't done that anywhere.
  4. Yes, 10-3 is mediocre in the SEC. The goal is championships, not also ran. This isn't the PAC 12.
  5. Agree with all of that. The team has looked much better, and Schmedding & Friend have done a good job, expecially under the circumstances. The whole staff really has done a good job of not just holding the team together, but revamping the system, and inspiring the kids to play winning ball even with all that has happened, and in a season that is largely a bust.
  6. The fans' impatience doesn't change what Pat Dye and many of us saw in Kirby Smart. There is no doubt about a great football mind. Where did I say Kirby had to totally rebuild them? GA wasn't awful, and in need of a total rebuild, unlike Auburn at this point. But 8 and 10 win seasons are not the standard for greatness in the SEC. Kirby took mediocrity and turned it into a juggernaut.
  7. He was totally that coach. GA just wasn't that team yet, hence the 10-3 mediocrity. Just needed a little time ..
  8. But we DID know! Even Pat Dye told them to hire Kirby.
  9. They do look better, more aggressive, the past couple of weeks .. but I'm still on the fence with him b/c our defense has been impotent all year until now. That may or may not be fair to him.
  10. He's a "paper coach" alright! But he's still just a rumor .. Pat Dye is the current standard for coaching at Auburn with the exception that he could never quite pull off the national championship. Our years with Dye were amazing, and Auburn was a powerhouse on both sides of the ball!
  11. Kirby didn't become the coach he is now whiel he was at GA .. he was already THAT coach. He only needed the time to build GA. His pedigree and experience put him head and shoulders above Gus, a high school coach who struck oil with Cam Newton. Lanning is comparable to Kirby. Dan Lanning has the defensive coaching background and the SEC pedigree & recruiting experience having coached under Kirby at Bama & GA. He, like Kirby, just needs time to build! But, I'd MUCH prefer he build his dynasty at Auburn!
  12. It was way to early to know Kirby would build a juggernaut when Auburn passed on him in 2013 to hire flashy guru Gus and his sandlot high school offense. But, some of us DID know ... Regarding Lane, we already know Lane doesn't have a great football mind; he has analytics, and believes his "scenario probability tables" will always provide the winning decision matrix, all evidence to the contrary. Heck, Lane's train was stopped cold by a herd of swarming Hawgs! One other stat: Lane is only the 29th winningest coach in the country. That's 6 places behind Gus Malzahn, and 10 places behind Bryan Harsin. http://www.coacheshotseat.com/WinningestActiveCoachesIA.htm
  13. Guess it was way to early to know that about Kirby when Auburn passed on him in 2013 to hire flashy guru Gus and his sandlot high school offense. No pedestals .. just want Auburn to hire a great football mind who can rebuild Auburn as a powerhouse. Offensive coaches are a dime a dozen .. just look across the country! All the offenses look approximately the same, although admittedly some do a better job than others. But, the key to building the juggernaut is to build a suffocating, swarming defense to shut these fast offenses down. When we examine the behemoth football programs over the past 30-40 years, the difference between good teams, even great teams, and perennial behemoth championship teams is a defensive head coach who built a suffocating defense. Auburn needs to hire a great defensive coach, not a flashy offensive guy. Dan Lanning has the defensive coaching background AND the SEC pedigree & recruiting experience having coached under Kirby at Bama & GA. Yes, offense in 2022 is fast and fun, and it still sells tickets; but, defense still wins championships. Dan Lanning has the SEC pedigree, coached under Saban and Kirby, and he's a GREAT recruiter. IMO, he is going to build a juggernaut program somewhere, and I'd like him to do that at Auburn, not Oregon, or worse, at another SEC competitor.
  14. Agree that PAC-12 football is inferior. But, his success at Oregon is not why I want him.
  15. Agree with all of this. Go back and watch Lanning's "denial", watch his non-verbals. His words and his non-verbals do not match. It has been rumored that Auburn has continued talking to Lanning, and I truly hope Auburn is bringing Lanning back, and Kiffin is just the red herring. But, my hope is waning. Lanning was my choice from the beginning, but leave it to Auburn to hire a flashy, mediocre coach instead of a substantial coach. Lane would win enough to not be fired, but, IMO, he isn't good enough to build a juggernaut. He'd just be another Gus. 🙁
  16. He is not affiliated with Auburn, but he also doesn't have a named source for any of his "reporting". "Sources say" is not credible journalism. That alone should kill his rep.
  17. You mean, who do I want them to hire? My choice was, and is, Dan Lanning. We need to move to a defensive coach. Offensive coaches are a dime a dozen .. just look across the country! All the offenses look approximately the same, although admittedly some do a better job than others. But, the key to building the juggernaut is to build a suffocating, swarming defense to shut these fast offenses down. Heck, Lane's train was shut down by a herd of swarming Hawgs! Dan Lanning has the SEC pedigree, coached under Saban and Kirby, and he's a GREAT recruiter. IMO, he is going to build a stout program somewhere, and I'd like him to do that at Auburn, not Oregon, or worse, at another SEC competitor. Yes, I know what Lanning said. I watched his "denial", but his non-verbals didn't match his words, and I think he IS interested. He gave "reasons", but he didn't actually deny interest. Maybe I'm wrong, and I'm just a football snob, but he's an SEC guy, and once you've played/coached in the best conference in the country, half filled stadiums of half hearted ducks on the rainy left coast just doesn't make the cut. Auburn should go out there and do whatever it takes to bring him back!
  18. They're responding to internet rumors, which is really all we have had during this search. Somehow, there have been no leaks in this search. He may want to leave, but I'm not at all clear that Auburn is on board that train. He may not be the guy at all .. he may have been a red herring all along. My point was that everywhere Lane has coached, except maybe FAU, he left wreckage and angry people in his wake. This rumor is having the same effect, and it may not even be true!
  19. That is a hoot! Seems like ole Lane leaves a trail of destruction in his wake everywhere he coaches.
  20. That sounds similar to Dan Lanning's "denial" .. he even has the same non-verbals.
  21. Agree with you. Phillip Marshall has said nobody knows who Auburn is talking to except Cohen and McGlynn. There are no leaks in this search. My theory is that the mob came up with a shortlist when Harsin was fired, and in the absence of any leaks or actual journalism to find out what's been happening, that shortlist is all they had. So, the chattering class narrowed the shortlist based on some imaginary criteria, and that's what they're reporting. Lane is the top candidate reported b/c no one actually knows who all Cohen is interviewing. I sure do hope they've found someone better than Lane Kiffin and Hugh Freeze.
