NCAA Rule

Recommended Posts

The NCAA needs to come up with a rulle that a players has to stay at least 3 years before turning pro. In football and basketball, most players jump ship after their 3rd year. But baseball players can leave after just 1 year of college ball.

Are you sure about that?

^^^^That is what I thought^^^^

If you go JUCO you can be drafted every year, but if you attend a 4 year school you have to stay 3 years.

In Baseball a player must be three years out of high school if he enrolls in a 4 yr school. A JUCO is eligible sooner in baseball. Football players must have been out of high school three years in order to be eligible for the draft and in Basketball one year out of high school. The NCAA can do nothing about these rules as they are the pro rules not NCAA(in the case of Football and Basketball, not sure about baseball).

The rules are negotiated between the various professional sports and the unions that represent the players.  The rules are based on (1) what benefits the player's unions the most and (2) what benefits the professional league the most.....and based on those two objectives, each professional sport sets up the rules that allow a prospective player to become part of their system.      NCAA has little meaningful input.

Note that none of these organizations (NFL, MBL, NBA , player's unions) are worried about what is in the long term best interest of the individual college player and certainly they are not concerned about how their rules affect college sports.    This relationship is totally one-sided in favor of professional sports and the colleges have to adjust to whatever rules the pros come up with.    IMO the "one and done' business in college basketball has ruined the game though I guess it does creates conditions where teams like Butler and VCU (and others) can advance in national tournaments with a team of slightly better than average juniors and seniors who have learned to play well enough together to give the Kentuckys of the world (with their freshmen wonders) some competition.
