ellitor 33,093
My source says he signs with AU. At this point there isn't anything to worry about regarding Jovon's recruitment. He's All AU and at this time he does not have plans to visit other schools. The buzz that there is comes from Bama fans just trying to make AU fans worry and some AU fans complying by worrying. Rednilla 5,391
I think the reason you don't redshirt them is because they are gone after 3 if they are that good. Think if Mike Dyer had been redshirted. Take advantage of the time you have with them, if they are able to positively contribute from the get go. Dyer wasn't redshirted because he was needed from the get go. Remember, Tre Smith was played in 2002 despite the presence of Carnell and Ronnie because Tubs said he didn't expect him to be around for more than 4 years, anyway, and if not for getting injured during the 04 season and taking a medical redshirt (which might have been afforded him even with a normal redshirt his freshman season), he never would have been around to pick up the blocked punt and flipping into the end zone against the eventual national champs in 06. Now, of course, he was vital to winning the Iron Bowl that started our run of six straight over Bama, but he was also the third stringer, whereas it is highly unlikely Johnson will be any more than fourth string, and maybe not even that high. This is Running Back U, after all, and we've been recruiting the position very well every season pretty much since Malzahn arrived as OC. Roc isn't being redshirted both because he IS that good AND because he brings a different element to the table. Now, if Johnson earns his way on the field, then so be it...but the only way I see him not redshirting is if one (or more) of the other backs gets injured. He's an outstanding running back, but unlike Roc, he doesn't bring anything to the table not already there with the others who will be in the mix. Furthermore, even after redshirting, he will still likely be Thomas's understudy for at least a year, probably Barber's as well, and potentially behind one or both of them for two seasons...and that's not factoring in whatever impact Pettway has (though Kam is probably going to be more of a specialist with his bruising running style, and thus be more a complement to Kerryon than anything else). If he doesn't redshirt, then there is a high probability that he will not be the primary ball carrier until his senior year, which I would think puts more pressure on him to perform that season than it would if he were a redshirt junior who still had two years to impress the scouts. Of course, that's a long way away, and a lot of hypotheticals would have to play out for it to come to fruition that way, but due to the fact that we will have four SEC quality RBs with more experience at a higher level of ball than Johnson, it is unlikely to be advantageous for us to play him. And even if he does redshirt and show out enough that he goes pro early, it isn't as if we're going to stop recruiting running backs, nor is it likely that we will be unable to sign top notch guys in 2016 and beyond. Again, this is RBU, and recruiting has been good enough for long enough that now we are beginning to stack 'em and rack 'em, so to speak. And just think how cool it will be to have an Auburn running back going high in the draft year after year after year...

All that is great and all, but do you honestly think the staff is going to redshirt a potential 5 star recruit? Top talent doesn't just come in and sit bench for a year. Now there are interviews that I've read on KJ and he's said that he is glad Jovon is coming to Auburn because of how great the RB stable is going to be, but I honestly don't think CGM redshirts Kerryon. He is too good to just sit bench.
mcgufcm 4,096
Plus, you have to remember the roles we'll have to fill next season. New QB (Marshall). New starting RB (Artis-Payne). New speed RB (Grant). New H-Back (Fulse). New TE (Uzomah). Very likely a new WR1 (Duke). New slot WR (Bray). If a guy can make plays, there will be snaps available on offense next year. Thomas, Barber, Pettway, Mitchell, Truitt, etc. They will all have a shot at major roles. So will Jovon Robinson, Kerryon Johnson, D'Penny McGriff, etc. It's open season on starting and rotation spots for our skill positions next year.
