They had outsized influence though. They scared the s*** out of the rest of the Republican caucus. Hell, Eric Cantor,  the House majority leader at the time, was primaried by a Tea party candidate.

They were instrumental in removing a good moderate Republican in my district. (Bob Inglis)

They definitely pushed the GOP much further to the right.
