Tancredo won't back down

No apology for discussing retaliation on Muslim holy sites

"Well, what if you said something like, If this happens in the United States and we determine that it is the result of extremist, fundamentalist Muslims, you know, you could take out their holy sites."    Rep. Tom Tancredo

(AP)

Washington - Rep. Tom Tancredo refused Monday to back down from his statement Friday suggesting that the United States might respond to a radical Islamic terrorist attack by bombing Muslim holy sites.

Muslim groups earlier Monday called on Tancredo to apologize and said they want to meet with the Colorado Republican.

"I'm not suggesting we do it. I have nothing to apologize for in that respect," Tancredo said. "I'm simply saying to have a good discussion on this issue, a thorough discussion on what is perhaps the most serious kind of possible situation we could face as a civilization, that you cannot simply take things off the table because they are uncomfortable to talk about."

Tancredo, a Littleton Republican, made the statement about bombing Muslim holy sites, including the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca, on a Florida talk-radio show.

Sounds like something that might get their attention and cause them to stop and think for a bit. Of course, the leftists will say, "it will make them hate us" but how can they hate us more than already do, so nothing we do will make it worse. These people have no respect for anything but force and power. If we hit them hard, holy sites, terrorist controlled cities, anywhere it will hurt them, they WILL be forced to pull back.

This is a global assault on mankind by Islamic Terrorist. Attacking a geographical region or killing a race of humans isn't going to stem this tide. The zealots of Islam don't love life, don't care for their families, or land, or any material things on Earth.....save possibly one thing. Their Holy sites. That's the only thing that they seem to recognize - seems like during the Iraq war, our troops were constantly having to be extra careful not to blow up this ' HOLY ' Mosque, or disturb that 'HOLY' city too much.

The Islamist don't want to 'talk' about their feelings.

They don't want to negotiate

They don't want apeace treaty.

They want you to convert, or die.

There's no middle ground.

Define "them".

You're absolutely right about the terrorists--they're just mad dogs and any more hate on their part is probably an improvement 'cause any more and they'll just be out of control and unable to coldly calculate more attacks. But blowing up holy sites would outrage more than just the terrorists. It would also enrage moderate arabs and every muslim who ever made the pilgrimage to Mecca. And that's a good way to recruit more terrorists.

If "the enemy" means al qaeda and other militant terrorists--a small subset of Islam--then we must win the hearts and minds of the OTHER Islamics, get them to abandon the militants and come over to Democracy.

If "the enemy" means Islam itself--if the whole culture is unalterably opposed to American freedom--then we should stop wasting resources "rebuilding" their cities, and instead withdraw all our troops out of that land and just bomb it and bomb it until there's nothing left standing.

Which is it going to be?

I agree with texaubie--there are terrorists who deliberately hide in mosques, stockpile their ammo there, etc., BECAUSE they figure we wouldn't dare bomb a holy site. Hey, if it's their choice to take the fight to the mosque, I say shame on them and it's their own fault if we knock it down to get at them. Let the mosque cry out "No hiding place down here". My understanding is that's not what Tancredo is suggesting--he's talking about attacking holy sites just to honk people off, because they're holy sites. That's just crazy. That's a good way to inspire militant Shi'ite revolutions across the whole Middle East and make even the British distance themselves from us.
