Alabama, Auburn report violations

Schools tell NCAA, conference of secondary infractions

A member of Auburn's football team was declared ineligible this summer after inadvertently receiving $1,114 in stipends to pay for room and board while he was not enrolled in class.

The unnamed player was required to pay back the money on an installment plan, and the NCAA reinstated him before Auburn's first game of the season.

Meanwhile, Alabama football self-reported two secondary violations between Jan. 1 and mid-September this year, the Register learned through a recent open-records request.

Five unnamed student-athletes provided autographs at the grand-opening ceremony of a commercial establishment, resulting in an indirect endorsement of the business.

Also, the football department sent out recruiting materials to a student-athlete before Sept. 1 of the player's junior year. The information on the prospective student-athlete (PSA) was incorrectly noted in Alabama's football recruiting computer system.

Auburn's financial aid infraction, the only secondary NCAA violation reported by Auburn since May 1, was released to the Register last week.

...

According to NCAA rules, student-athletes are allowed to receive only room-and-board stipends when they are enrolled in an academic session. The Auburn football player in question was forced to drop an accounting class in the first summer session because he had not completed a prerequisite class. The business office did not immediately notice the dropped class and gave the player his normal stipend.

Auburn reported to the NCAA that it would now require all room-and-board stipends to be distributed through the compliance office.

Alabama reported 10 secondary violations in all sports from Jan. 1 to mid-September, including a pair in men's basketball, both for exceeding the limit of five recruiting opportunities for a PSA by one opportunity.

Alabama's self-reported violations included one by the athletic administration (for providing a non-permissible endorsement for a recruiting service on its Crimsontradition.com Web site), two by women's tennis, one by men's tennis, one in women's basketball and one by the swimming team.

People actually want Bama autographs?
