Bush serves up a fish story for his 'best moment'

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - President Bush says his best moment as president was the time he caught a 7 1/2 -pound largemouth bass.

When the German newspaper Bild asked him to name his best and worst moments as president, Bush gave an offbeat answer about the best moment, while giving a more predictable response about his worst.

"The most awful moment was September the 11th, 2001," Bush said. He added that it took time to understand the depth of the terrorist attacks. "I would say the toughest moment of all was after the whole reality sunk in and I was trying to help the nation understand what was going on, and ... be empathetic for those who had lost lives.

"I would say the best moment was when I caught a 7 1/2 -pound largemouth bass on my lake," Bush said, laughing.

I suspect he's lying about the weight of the fish, because, you know, he's Bush, but I have no trouble believing it was the single best accomplishment of his term.

Please read again. He said best "moment". Not accomplishment. Just like a dim, make it sound close but still lie about it and try to convince all that its the truth.

Yeah, but you see, for Presidents that actually have accomplishments, those tend to be the best moments:

Best moment of Presidency quotes: Carter, Clinton, and Bush

How did President Carter answer the question?

"I think the best time was probably dealing with the Middle East issue at Camp David," he said, "and even better I think was the peace treaty that came along six months later. I made a very difficult decision over the almost unanimous opposition of my cabinet and my staff to take the initiative and to go to Egypt and to go to Israel to try to get Begin and Sadat to agree on a peace treaty. And when they did sign-both of them signed the agreement-I guess that was probably my best moment."

How did President Clinton answer the question?

JIM LEHRER: As we sit here right now, Mr. President, is this the best moment of your presidency?

PRESIDENT CLINTON: Oh, no, I won't say that. I don't know. So many things have happened here at home that have been important to me; passing economic plan, passing the Brady Bill and assault weapons ban, so many things have happened internationally, the role that I was fortunate to be able to play in the peace process in the Middle East and in Northern Ireland, but this could have the biggest long-term positive consequences if we do it right. But frankly, I hadn't, you know -- Sometimes people say "do you feel vindicated?" The answer is no. I think America has been vindicated. I think what we stand for has been vindicated. But keep in mind that there have been times in the past where people win a conflict and then squander the peace. So a lot of our work is still ahead of us. We've gotta get the people home, get the land mines up, work out the details of who is involved in the peacekeeping mission. We have to get this -- We've got to organize police forces and civil government for the Kosovars. And then the really big thing over the long-run, our European friends want to take the lead in this but we ought to help them, we've got to get the World Bank and all these other people involved in a development plan for the Balkans that involves not just Kosovo, but Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, and I hope someday Serbia if they have a government that respects freedom and democracy and human rights. So that these people have something pulling them together instead of these ancient ethnic troubles pulling them apart.

Now if we get all that done, it might be perhaps the most satisfying thing because it might prove that people can lay down their hatreds of people who are different. You know, I basically think free people will figure out a way to make the most of their lives and work out their problems if they can get the rules of engagement right. That's why I gave somewhat of an extended answer to what you said about the Republicans. Because, I think, you know, differences are good. Nobody's got the whole truth. But you gotta get the rules of engagement right. And I think what we did in Kosovo was profoundly important.

How did President Bush answer the question?

You know, I've experienced many great moments and it's hard to name the best," Bush told weekly Bild am Sonntag when asked about his high point since becoming president in January 2001.

"I would say the best moment of all was when I caught a 7.5 pound (3.402 kilos) perch in my lake," he told the newspaper in an interview published on Sunday.

I think for Daddy Bush, it was the Berlin wall coming down. You get the idea. Or maybe you don't.

Why don't you crybabies get over it already. The democrats next chance at HIS office is in 2008. You've got a hell of a rough 3 years ahead of you.

Regardless of accomplishments, I would have thought just getting there--being elected to the Presidency--would be a bigger moment to most folks than catching a 7.5 pound bass.

At least he was only fishing... He could have been hunting and shot his friend in the face. :big:

I don't know about that. I have did alot of things that I could be proud of in my life, being president not one of them, but as an avid bass fisherman, hooking a good 7.5 pounder would be something I sure would not forget. I have yet to hook anything more then 5 lbs, thus my moniker "Wannabe bass fisherman".

Now Ranger:

1) If you wannabe a good fisherman, you've got to get better at lying. If you've caught a 5-pounder, don't you know to add 1/2 a pound each time you tell the story? You'll be up to 7 1/2 lbs. in just 5 tellings! [Or was that 5-pounder originally only 2.5? :big: ]

2) Beyond fishing, the only vocation that requires greater flexibility with the truth is probably politics. Regardless of party or platform, honesty is the greatest challenge to career politicians. As the saying goes, if they can fake that, the sky's the limit for political asperations..

Probably the happiest he's been since entering the WH. Sounds like an honest answer. Folks will take it and twist it however they feel, but at least W isn't giving some lame ass, focus group tested drivel that other Presidents might offer up, givng folks a sound bite that they want to hear.
