Police report: "Johnson continued to swing his arms..."

Posted by Ian R. Rapoport February 25, 2008 10:28 AM

OK, I've got a hold of the official arrest report filed in the wee hours of Saturday morning after the arrest of Alabama safety Rashad Johnson. The senior captain was charged with disorderly conduct, then released after posting $500 bond.

We had some details of the incident Saturday morning. But this report offers much more based on the account of arresting officer Derek Kilgore of the Tuscaloosa Police Department.

Here are some details, all according to the police and all alleged. Johnson's side has not yet been heard:

-- As a man with a yellow shirt was being escorted outside the bar, a second subject later identified as Julian Rashad Johnson (we only know him as Rashad Johnson) walked up to the security guard and attempted to grab his friend who was being taken out. At that point, Johnson "pushed a security guard that was standing in the doorway of The Legacy" and he "fell backward on to the sidewalk outside the doorway."

-- At that point, the report says Johnson "started swinging his arms, pushing several security officers out of the way in an attempt to" go toward the fallen officer.

-- While the officers attempted to restrain Johnson, he kept going back at the security guard. By then, Officers identified as Kilgore, Webster, and B.K. McDonald "were able to make it through the heavy crowd that had gathered outside and assist officer Sams with taking Mr. Johnson into custody."

-- During that process, Johnson "continued to swing his arms nearly striking officers Kilgore and Webster." Kilgore wrote that he told Johnson several times "Stop police" and "Stop resisting," but he would not comply. As they took him to the ground, the report says he still tried to push the officers off and was yelling about needing to get his watch.

-- While this was happening, a crowd had gathered. "Several people were yelling and grabbing at officers to let Johnson go," so much so that the police had to stop what they were doing to control the crowd. As Johnson was being patted down, the report specifically states that "a while male subject grabbed me and said, 'Let him go' but" Kilgore pushed him away.

-- In the Publix parking lot in handcuffs, Johnson was told he was being arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. He was searched for weapons, the cuffs were adjusted and he was asked how he was: "I'm fine," he told police.

-- Kilgore reports that he could smell "a faint odor of alcohol" on Johnson's breath. He was not charged with an alcohol-related offense, but on the front of the report, it states: "Been drinking." By the way, the report also lists Johnson's weight at an estimated 145 pounds... go figure.

-- On the way to the station, the report said Johnson asked the officers, "Is there any way we can take care of this without me being arrested?" He continued to plead with officers to "find another way not to take him to jail." He was quickly processed, posted bond, and was released. Officer Webster had a small cut on his knee.

OK, that's all I have so far -- the word of the police, via this report. Still no word from Johnson's side, though I'll keep trying...
