Obama Clinches Democratic Nomination

Last Primaries and Superdelegates Push Obama to Victory

By JENNIFER PARKER

June 3, 2008

Based on the preliminary exit polls and our reporting, ABC News projects Sen. Barack Obama will have enough delegates to secure the Democratic nomination after the votes from the final primary contests are counted tonight.

Obama, D-Ill., is within 9 delegates of the 2,118 needed to clinch the Democratic nomination for president and is expected to win an additional number of delegates in the final primary contests and further superdelegate endorsements Tuesday.

Making history by becoming the nation's first African-American major party presidential nominee, Obama, emerges victorious from one of the longest and most closely found Democratic nomination fights in recent history.

The win is a huge accomplishment for Obama, 46,a first-term U.S. senator who, if he wins the White House, would be among the youngest presidents in U.S. history.

Delivering rousing speeches with a popular message of hope and change, Obama's insurgent candidacy inspired record-breaking campaign contributions, record turnout by black voters, and wide support from independents, liberals, young voters, and high-income, better-educated Democrats.

He cast his campaign as a rejection of old-style Washington politics and painted Clinton as an incumbent.

Outstanding speech. I loved the part about McCain's challenge to go with him to Iraq.Obama's reply, maybe McCain needs to take a trip around this country.

Maybe this:

Where oh where Obama will you get the money to fund a government run educational system. I mean, how else will you pay all these teachers more money?

How will you MAKE the oil companies and big business spend their profits to pay for government run measures on fuel and eco-enviro policy? Isn't this country founded on freedom and capitalism?

How will you pay for healthcare????? You will steal it from me. I'm sure of that!

How will you make a college education a "Birth Right" in America??? You guessed it.....steal it away from me!!!!

Obama is preaching to me like I'm at his old Trinity Church. I found myself wondering when the spirits of angels would desend on the crowd and ask for money.

Obama preaches ONE AMERICA, while he sets an agenda on how to turn this once proud, free society into a socialist state. There's no question about his intentions.

I have not problem making it known. McCain isn't a preacher, and he isn't this new kind of social nutt. He's not the kid on the stage who taughts what he doesn't truly believe. TRUST will be the deciding factor in this race. WHO WILL YOU TRUST?

The gloves are off.......let the true fight begin.

And by the way, arnaldoabru. McCain has been around this country more times than Obama has been to the bathroom. Just another jab by a sissy on reality. Obama has issues much greater than a speech can deliver him from.

Nail, meet hammer.

This election won't be nearly as close as some of you would like to believe. Just watch.

I have been....and the polls tell it very clear. He's got problems, just like O BAMA has the last 6 years. In a year when the sitting president is at 30% or less, he SHOULD be way ahead. He's not by a long shot.

Yes He Can? I can't help but laugh at the slogan. I hope this is not another one of Obama's slogans. If I remember correctly the slogan "Yes We Can" was made famous by a cartoon my little girl used to watch called Bob The Builder. :roflol:

Congrats to Obama. I for one do not think the primary going into June hurt the party. Otherwise, there wouldn't be a primary in all 50 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, and so forth.

I think the whole Florida and Michigan thing hurts a bit, but not sure how much damage was done. And besides, they have a few months to cool off. We won't know how much Michigan and Florida democrat voters will hold it against Obama if at all until November.
