The Auburn equestrian team (6-5) will participate in the 2009 Varsity Equestrian National Championships in Waco, Texas, today-Saturday.

The Tigers will be one of 12 teams to compete in both Hunt Seat and Western competitions at the Heart of Texas Fair Complex.

The Tigers are ranked first in Hunt Seat and eighth in Western for the 2009 VENCs. Sophomores Paige Monfore and Anna Schierholz along with freshman Maggie McAlary were selected for individual competition.

Monfore was selected third in Western Reining, while McAlary and Schierholz were selected third and fifth in Hunt Seat Equitation over Fences.

“This is a team that can win the overall national title,” said Auburn head coach Greg Williams. “Hunt Seat is expected to perform well, hence the No.1 seed. Western has a lower seed, but that has always worked in our favor.”

In the Hunt Seat division, top-seeded Auburn will have a bye in the first round. Auburn will face the winner of eighth-seeded Kansas State and ninth-seeded Tennessee-Martin. The Tigers defeated the Wildcats 6-4 in Hunt Seat on Mar. 13.

In the Western division, eighth-seeded Auburn will face ninth-seeded New Mexico State with the winner advancing to face top-seeded Texas A&M.

In individual competition, third-seeded McAlary will face South Carolina’s sixth-seeded Nicole Bourgeois, while fifth-seeded Schierholz will face Baylor’s fourth-seeded Nicole Brown in Hunt Seat Equitation over Fences. Third-seeded  Monfore will face Georgia’s sixth-seeded Sarah Locker in Western Reining.
