AUSportTalk 4
Junior catcher Tony Caldwell was one of 53 catchers placed on the initial watch list for the 2010 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced late Monday. Caldwell is hitting .318 through the first six games this season but has been primarily used in the outfield in the early part of the season. Added to the Bench Award watch list midway through the 2009 season, he threw out 40 percent (25-of-63) of attempted stolen bases last year, starting 51 games behind the plate. The award is given annually to the top division one collegiate catcher and will be updated to include other candidates until May 5, 2010. The watch list will be narrowed down to ten semi-finalists, whom will be announced May 19, 2010. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 2, prior to the NCAA Regionals and MLB Draft. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series and the winner will be announced at the 13th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on July 1, 2010.
