According to some experts Trumps hardline rhetoric, sanctions, show of force and some behind the scene pressure from China brought NK to the negotiating table.

Trying to deflect? There’s an entire separate thread of whining over the porn star. Is every post not about the porn star a “deflection” now?

Trumps hard line with  North Korea, China, and Russia as far as illicit trace with North Korea and saying that military action is on the table is the impetus behind the meeting. Assuming the meeting does occur. His bringing on Bolton doubles down on his hard line. Now only time will tell if this a master stroke that has really changed the dynamic on the Korean Peninsula or if what he has done leads to some type of military action that has the potential to be catastrophic.

At this time it appears to be progress but when dealing with North Korea you never know as they don't always act rationally which is the wildcard.

I wish this hard line had been done a few Presidents back before they had the nuclear option. With them having the nuclear option now it will be a catastrophe if this backfires but even if he had not taken the hard line their was still a potential for a catastrophe because a leader who seems to be irrational has the nuclear option.

Remove the American lens, and try to consider North Korea's perspective.  Reality is that nothing Trump has said, publicly at least, has anything to do with North Korea's actions.  North Korea has always wanted to be at the negotiating table, and have long considered a nuclear program to be their strongest bargaining chip at the table.  North Korea is now in the position where they have nuclear weapons, means to deliver nuclear weapons on a target, and everyone knows it and is acting accordingly.  They are in the strongest negotiating position that they have ever been in, and they know it.  They are certainly not cowering in fear from more bellicose rhetoric and posturing from the United States, they have been hearing that in one form or another since Eisenhower was President.  To North Korea, a meeting with the President of the United States is legitimizing them, and their position.

Tactically, nuclear weapons are useless to North Korea.  If they ever made any attempt to deploy one, they would be annihilated in response, and they know that.  None of the Kim's have been interested at all in annihilation.  The only use North Korea has ever had for nuclear weapons is a strong international bargaining chip first, and a strategic deterrent second.  Their experience with the United States and the Agreed Framework will also make them vary wary of anything we have to say.  While they are widely considered irrational, North Korea has actually been consistently rational, given their position and objectives.

I doubt military action results, or I at least hope someone wise is in a position to remove Trump from that ledge.  I do hope something good comes from it, but North Korea already knows that we cannot be trusted.  If we think there will be a one-sided, completely favorable agreement, we will be disappointed.
