mustache eagle 2,412
I am sure this has been covered in the past. But, i could not help myself with this little diddy ... http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-Sports/2013/09/12/Goodell-Redskins Goodell says “If one person is offended, we have to listen," are you freaking kidding me ... does this mean that if i complain and am offended by the wussification of the nfl, then he should listen to me just the same? AUpocalypse 12
Didn't grow up on a reservation or anything, but I am Native American and I think this pursuit for political correctness is a silly outlet for bored people to chase a cause. The inclusion of these things in our sports is an honor and representation of history to me. If this were a serious and logical issue, then people should chase movie execs, toy makers, cartoonists, or maybe the European countries responsible for invading in the first place. It's all just an unnecessary waste of time. Sports have more than 150 years under the belt in using names (such as these) to distinguish and identify themselves. Grandfather those who have such names if need be and let's move on society.
around4ever 4,139
I'm with AUpocalypse. My lineage is deeply rooted in the Creek Tribe. My paternal Great Grandmother was full blooded Creek. I am very proud of that part of my heritage. I have no problem with the Redskins, Braves, Indians, Chiefs, etc. being used a nicknames for sports teams. I consider it honoring my heritage. I know that at one time in history, redskin was considered a derogatory term. I tend to think otherwise. I consider it to be a term representing the bravery and courage of Native Americans. As has been said many times, every nickname is going to be offensive to somebody in today's pudinization of America.

Sickens me when men say they are "offended". These type of idiotic issues just further the reality that our society has been pansified. AU64 10,122
The NFL is late to this game so to speak. Probably ten years ago the NCAA brow-beat all college teams that had "offensive" team mascots by threatening to keep them out of bowl and TV productions. Money did the trick obviously and teams like William and Mary, Stanford, and dozens more dropped their Native American references though somehow FSU was able to get the Seminoles to allow them to keep their traditional name...and amazingly, allowed them to use the horse and rider to celebrate TDs and the like....I mean, did the Seminoles even ride horses down in the Everglades? most likely not. Otherwise, all across the nation colleges and universities did the PC thing which I guess is not too surprising since colleges and universities are the most PC institutions in this country. Thus far the Braves, Redskins and Indians in professional sports have ignored the whining but looks like someone in congress is threatening ole Roger G....maybe time to look at the NFL's exemption to the country's anti-trust laws? around4ever 4,139
There are still plenty of college teams with Native American related names. Looking over the list I found some very interesting nicknames. One of the funniest was the Scripps College Stags. Whats funny about it? It is an all women school. Oh well, check out the list if you are interested. If not, then as the bammer admins say, "nothing to see here, move along".

The word was orginally documented as being used by tribes in the midwest. The use of the word in Hollywood cowboy and Indian fantasy movies have more to with their reaction than anything else. I've never heard the term used in conversation except to refer to the football team, even in the 50s and 60s before political correctness. And Arkansas needs to get rid of their pig mascot too. Offensive to Moslem students.
