The Democratic Party is Divided

Recommended Posts

On the surface, the Democratic Party has been united and energized by its shared disgust for Trump. But dig an inch deeper and it’s clear that the party is divided, split on issues including free trade, health care, foreign affairs and Wall Street. They even disagree over the political wisdom of doing deals with Trump.

I hope they get even more divided as a party. They have sure done their part to divide the country.. But at least some of them have recognized that Pelosi is hurting them.

I don't know how far this carries forward, but running candidates that aren't quite so party-dogmatic has been successful since the loss in 2016.  It's also a reasonable strategy to position the party as the center-left option, while parties like Green and Tea Party/Libertarian/GOP cater to the extremes.

There is nothing inherently wrong with political disagreement if party participants can work towards compromise.  It's the way our government should be functioning anyway.

Just to let my bias show, my hope is that Trump/Ryan/McConnell are the death nail (knell) for the GOP.  The DNC splits into center-left and center-right, and we are done for a while with incendiary polarization that has grown since the late 90's.  I know it's a pipe dream, but hope springs eternal.

Besides, this has been reported previously by NBC, and I believe that NBC has been identified by this forum as fake news.

Honestly: Disagreement is a good thing, especially for someone like me that is a moderate. I don't want an extreme right world, I don't want an extreme left world.

I think this is somewhat apropos to my comment about my wish for the Democratic Party.

It's my personal opinion that the DNC should welcome moderate conservatives like Painter.  That would help the party to develop as a more idea oriented organization.  As opposed to a strictly libera/dogmatic organization, or the GOP's no principle/Trumpian organization.
