BATON ROUGE -- For the second time in 10 days, the LSU football team has seen a starter go down to a significant injury.

Senior outside linebacker E.J. Kuale of Daytona Beach, Fla., injured his ankle at practice Monday afternoon when a teammate fell on him during a non-contact drill. LSU coach Les Miles confirmed the injury Monday night but not the full extent of it, and he said he wanted to talk more with Kuale. Miles did say it was not a season-ending injury.

Miles lost starting tailback Alley Broussard for the season on Aug. 13 when the senior tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. Broussard led LSU in rushing last season with 867 yards.

Kuale, who transferred to LSU last season from Dodge City Community College in Dodge City, Kan., played in 11 games for the Tigers in 2004 with two starts at strongside outside linebacker. He made 22 tackles with four for losses. He has worked with the first team at outside linebacker all August.

Miles said recently that Kuale and fellow senior Cameron Vaughn, who is at middle linebacker, would lead the Tigers' linebacking unit this season.

Either sophomore Ali Highsmith, who started two games last season and whom Miles said was pushing Kuale, or junior Jason Spadoni could replace Kuale should he miss the Tigers' season opener on Sept. 3 against North Texas.

Sorry to hear about the young man. Injuries are the part of the game we all wish they could avoid.
