CNN banned in Iran for translation gaffe

Mon Jan 16, 2006 10:46 AM ET

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran on Monday banned CNN journalists from working there after the broadcaster misquoted President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as saying Iran wanted nuclear weapons, the ISNA students news agency said.

CNN's simultaneous translation of Ahmadinejad's lengthy news conference on Saturday included the phrase "the use of nuclear weapons is Iran's right".

In fact, what the Iranian president said was that "Iran has the right to nuclear energy," the official IRNA news agency reported. CNN later clarified in an apology on Sunday night. After watching what CNN misquotes here this is really SOP for CNN.

Iran denies any intention of seeking nuclear weapons, saying it wants atomic technology merely for the generation of electricity.

ISNA said Iran's Culture and Islamic Guidance Ministry deemed the error a "violation of professional ethics" and suspended CNN journalists from working in Iran until further notice.

CNN does not have a permanent bureau in Iran but a local journalist is a contributor to the network and visiting correspondents are occasionally given permission to enter the country on short assignments.

Actually here is an accurate translation of what Ahmadinejad said.

Iran's Psychotic President Projects

Accusing the West of being "in the dark ages," Ahmadinejad (who presides over a nation where tens of thousands of people live in mud huts and rape victims who defend themselves are sentenced to death) did everything today except pound his shoe on the table, while insisting that Poland belonged to him. Oops, that was another fascist. Here is the Reader's Digest/Tammy version of the

madman's press conference today

"We are a peaceful nation who would never want to hurt anyone. We want nuclear energy for electricity, and we don't need nuclear weapons because we don't want to to hurt anyone, but if the West continues to irritate us by saying we want to hurt people, we'll have to hurt them. For implying that we want to hurt people. Which we don't want to do so you better stop it, or we'll hurt you because we are insulted by the accusation that we want to, uh, hurt people."

Yeah, that's about all he had to say!

MIke, I was making fun of CNN from veering away from the talking points on this. I was surprised that CNN didnt air a 100% lovefest. Afterall, there are no WMDs, etc, etc, etc. A fake war is coming, etc, etc, Bush is lying, Etc, etc.
