LegalEagle 22
Do any of you know what conditions have to be met for someone to establish AL residency for the purpose of paying in-state tuition at AU?
Guest Tigrinum Major
Used to be twelve months of residency in the state and applying for a driver's license. Don't know if that is still the case or not. Surely one of our bright students can shed some light on the subject.
Aubie16 1
Its a little harder than that now. I don't know all the specifics but a few of the requirements... Property in your name in alabama license plate in alabama drivers license in alabama parents can not claim you as dependent on taxes you must file your own alabama state taxes ....and you must have done all these things for over a year before you can apply for in-state. I think there are a few more requirements but those are the basics.

Do you mean real property (land, house, etc.)? I find it hard to believe that you have to own AL land to go to AU. I didn't. If you mean personal property like a car, I have less doubt. You wouldn't have to file AL taxes unless you have sufficient income would you? It must be that "out of state" parents cannot claim you. Thank you both for your help. If anyone else has info, please let me know. Thanks, LE
bigsixfive 327
Once you are admitted as out of state, you cannot change your status without completely leaving school for a year (like withdrawing and reapplying). Even if you graduate and wish to continue on to grad school, your status remains out of state - unless you wait a year as an Alabama resident before you start grad school. I think there are some loopholes if you get married though, but they are small.

If your parents live in-state then there are no problems or issues.

I say this because you can lease an apartment for a year and be considered "in-state", without actually owning any property.

AU! 0
Sounds like they want to squeeze every dime out of you they can. It's true, i was planning on doing whatever necissary for in-state tuition and my jaw hit the floor when I read all that a couple years ago. The whole, if you come to alabama to go to school, you will not be considered an instate resident is a bunch of crap.
