Schaeffer's arrival at Ole Miss delayed

Quarterback signee Brent Schaeffer will remain at home in south Florida where he is finishing junior college coursework to become eligible at Ole Miss, his mother says.

OXFORD — Ole Miss quarterback signee Brent Schaeffer will not be on campus until the end of July at the earliest, his mother said today.

Schaeffer, who was named the Rebels’ starting quarterback on national signing day, is at home in South Florida finishing his junior college coursework to become eligible at Ole Miss.

Chandra Schaeffer said her son must complete six hours of correspondence courses before he can enroll at Ole Miss. She said her son should finish in time to be eligible to play this fall.

“He wanted to get there sooner, I’m sure,” Chandra Schaeffer said. “He kind of had to get two years worth of work done in a year. “It was a lot of work.”

Schaeffer played last year for the College of the Sequoias, a two-year school in Visalia, Calif. In 2004, he started several games as a freshman for Tennessee.

Last month, Chandra Schaeffer said her son had completed junior college classes and was planning to be in Oxford at the beginning of July, for the start of the second summer school session.

Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron said that was his target date for Schaeffer’s arrival, too. Coaches prefer incoming players to be on campus during the summer to become acclimated to the surroundings and get to know their teammates.

Over the past two weeks, Orgeron has not returned repeated messages requesting an interview regarding Schaeffer.

Practice begins in early August and the Rebels’ first game is Sept. 3 at home against Memphis.

Needs six hours to get to Ole Miss

Why is Greg Smith in a boat with Schaeffer headed to Ole Miss? If Schaeffer would try the new highway ("Future Interstate 22"), I bet he could make to Ole Miss in five tops! Either way, he's got plenty of time before practice starts.
