Tennessee lose injured starters Johnson, Harrell for season

Sep. 10, 2006

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Two Tennessee starters injured in the game against Air Force will not return this season, the team's head athletic trainer said Sunday.

Cornerback Inky Johnson remained in the hospital Sunday after he was carted off the field during the game against Air Force.

Trainer Jason McVeigh said Johnson, a junior from Atlanta, underwent surgery to repair blood vessels in his right shoulder. He will need further surgery because of nerve injury.

"He is in stable condition at this time," McVeigh said in a statement.

Tackle Justin Harrell suffered a ruptured tendon in his left bicep and will also require surgery, McVeigh said.

Harrell, a senior from Martin, was the only consistent starter from a year ago returning in the front seven. End Turk McBride slid over to replace Harrell during the Air Force game.

Coach Phillip Fulmer said he didn't know how long Johnson would stay at the hospital.

Johnson appeared to hit helmets Saturday with Air Force's Justin Handley after a catch. He was on the ground for several minutes but could be seen moving his arms and legs. Fulmer said he was temporarily unconscious.

Johnson was taken by ambulance to University of Tennessee Medical Center.

"We're just really glad it's not anything with his head or neck," Fulmer said.

Two other players injured during the game, tailback Arian Foster and offensive lineman Ramon Foster, should be able to play against Florida, Fulmer said. They both sprained their left ankles.

The coaches were continuing to evaluate who should start in place of Johnson in this week's game against No. 7 Florida.
