Italy: Slain Pakistani girl remembered in poetry and music event

Alba, 19 Oct. (AKI) - A young Pakistani woman, Hina Saleem, murdered by her father last year in northern Italy in an 'honour killing' will be remembered in an innovative afternoon of Arab and Italian poetry readings and music next month in the northern town of Alba.

It is the first cultural event being organised in Italy for a mixed group of immigrants and Italians.

Leaders of Muslim women's groups in Italy, the well-known Arab women poets Maram al-Masri and Youmana Haddad, as well as immigrants from all over northern Italy, especially women and their families, are due to attend 'Poems for Hina' in Alba on 10 November.

The women poets will read their work unveiled in Arabic to an audience of Muslim women living in Italy, who will also be without their veils. Al-Masri and Haddad will also read their poems translated into Italian by one of Italy's most prominent translators, Valentina Colombo.

Hina (photo), who dressed in western clothes, worked in a pizzeria in the northern town of Sarezzo and lived with her Italian boyfriend was found with her throat slit buried in the garden of her family home, her head facing Mecca in August 2006.

Her father Mohammed confessed to her slaying.

Prosecutors allege he murdered Hina with the aid of other male relatives after they decided Hina had 'dishonoured' the family.

The young Moroccan woman Dounia Ettaib, who received threats after calling for justice for Hina that then prompted the Italian authorities to grant her citizenship, is due to attend the Alba event. Italian Moroccan women's assocation president, Souad Sbai, will also be present.

The Italy-based Moroccan musician, singer and choreographer of Berber descent, Nour Eddine, is slated to perform some of his distinctive music at the event, along with other artists.

Musicans, poets and members of the public will be invited to attend an Arab dinner, prepared by local staff under the supervision of a female Moroccan chef.

'Poems for Hina' is being sponsored by Alba's town council, and organised by the local tourist board and local business associations.

If that's what they look like under those burkas, then I'll have a piece of Islam for myself!

 I do apologize, for that was wrong.
