COLUMBIA, S.C. -- An 18-year-old man was charged Monday with assault and battery with intent to kill following the stabbing of South Carolina defensive lineman Jordin Lindsey last weekend.

Clifton Hunter Epps turned himself into authorities and confessed to the assault that took place early Saturday, police said.

Epps was taken to the Richland County jail. It wasn't immediately clear if he had a lawyer, jail officials said.

Lindsey sustained a 4-inch laceration to the left side of his neck and spent a night in the hospital before he was released, authorities said. Lindsey and Epps were arguing when Epps used a broken bottle to cut the victim, police said.

Lindsey's father said Jordin and his twin, Dustin, also a Gamecocks player, were walking early in the morning in Five Points, a neighborhood known for its college bar scene and restaurants.

Lindsey, a junior, didn't play this season after the NCAA turned down an eligibility request in September. He was kept on scholarship and expected to return to the team for his senior season next fall.

Lindsey, a 6-foot-3, 256-pound senior, started 15 of 25 games the last two seasons. He was a starter for South Carolina's final five games and recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass in the Gamecocks' Liberty Bowl victory over Houston in 2006.
