In both the LSU and Ole Miss games, Jesse Palmer harangued about how Thorne doesn't have confidence in his receivers. Having replaced Ike Hilliard with Marcus Davis was a very bad decision. When I posted that comment several months ago I was scorched by the MD supporters. IH was an All-American at UF, a 1,000 yd receiver, 3x SEC Championship team and numerous SEC records as a receiver. He then played and coached in the NFL over a decade each before coming to AU. MD was a GA at FSU, then coached one season at Hawaii, then one season at Jawja Southern. Compare the two resumes. Resumes do matter, but apparently not to AU fans on this forum. Not retaining Hilliard was a big mistake by HF. The chickens have come home to roost.

The job isn't just for coaching as DC, but also for recruiting, which has been the most difficult issue for AU. Ron Roberts recruiting is a blip on the map compared with CK's perennial experience. So far as being a DC, then you can say the same about RR. His D's were '20- #62, '21- #10 and '22- #65. RR's record would have been rejected also at FSU. CK's record at FSU was '14- #49, '15- #9, '16- #45, and '17- #29. That's if you want to compare apples to apples. CK would have been the better choice for AU, hands down.

Abusing players ? Exactly which players did he abuse ? He gave a swift kick one time in the rear of a prima donna kicker who wasn't doing his job who then whined about it. Josh Lambo got canned for NOT doing his job. The ONLY reason the Jags fired UM was because he had a poor coaching record in the pros. Hmmm ? Would I want a jerk who has an 85% win average in college fb and won 3 NCs, but kicked a player in the butt for cause, or a former hc who burned down the UM program he was coaching and was also a horrible example as a husband and father, so bad was he that the SEC refused to even allow to coach again ? The answer is clear, I'd choose UM over HF any day forever. Why am I not "thinking clearly" about pursuing UM or DS ? Swinney I get, but an "insider", austudent23 mentioned that there was talk between AU and DS for the job, which Finebaum reported the next day or so. That's the only reason I mention him, because people more knowledgeable than me or you said that he was under consideration. DS will most likely return to UA when the opportunity arises. And, why exactly would UM NOT be available to AU ? Can't be a question of money, because AU just paid almost $70 million for 5 seasons of coaching between Gus and Harsin. That's $14 million/year if you don't have your calculator handy. No coach has been paid that kind of money in college ball. If it's not a question of money, then why exactly would Urban Meyer NOT have been a candidate for AU ? You and others on this forum aren't thinking clearly. You'd rather be satisfied with a man who is severely compromised as a coach. But, oh well, you got the bottom of the barrel choice.

I don't know CK at all. Never met him. I'm comparing the resumes' of both coaches, which you aren't doing. HF had the choice between Ron Roberts who has had one good season as a DC at Baylor with ZERO recruiting experience of elite recruits and Charles Kelly who had several years at FSU as an excellent DC and is the #1 recruiter in the nation of elite talent and has been one of the best recruiters for over a decade. CK's credentials are superior to RR's. But if you want to do the "aw, shucks, coach is gonna hire the best for the job" attitude, then you can't see the forest for the trees. HF is dumbing down our coaching staff. Why would he do that ?

Maybe the question that should be asked is, Why did HF reject hiring the #1 college football recruiter in the nation as DC ? An AU alum btw, who played for Dye. This guy- Charles Kelly, Safeties Coach (FB), Alabama Crimson Tide (247sports.com) And why did HF fire Ike Hilliard, former NCAA All American, who played over 10 seasons in the NFL and then coached NFL wide receivers more than 10 seasons and now chose to hire a rookie ? And how do you know that MD is an ace recruiter, because no recruiting service has ever mentioned him........AT ALL, ever since he finished at AU ? HF has hired a rookie.

Whom would you rather have as AU's DC, Charles Kelly or Ron Roberts ? Charles Kelly applied for the AU DC job, but HF counter offered with the assistant DC job and, instead, offered the DC job to Roberts. Rather than taking the asst. DC job, CK opted for the Colorado DC position. Compare and contrast the qualities of the two coaches. I agree. I wasn't in favor of pursuing UM, but when HF came into the picture I thought, Why not ? UM's problems are anywhere near as bad as HF and he's proven himself at UF and OSU
