StatTiger 3,086
Coach Gene Chizik has been Auburn's DC since the 2002 season. We have played 34 games under Gene's "D". Here is a comparison of Chizik's defense compared to other Auburn defense's broken down by 34 game periods. Points allowed per game: 2002-04: 15.2 1999-01: 21.6 1996-98: 20.9 1992-95: 19.1 Yards allowed per game: 2002-04: 290 1999-01: 337 1996-98: 341 1992-95: 338 400-yard games allowed: 2002-04: 1 ( Arkansas ) 1999-01: 9 1996-98: 9 1992-95: 9 10 pts or less games allowed: 2002-04: 15 1999-01: 5 1996-98: 7 1992-95: 5 30 pt games allowed: 2002-04: 4 1999-01: 7 1996-98: 7 1992-95: 5 Under 300-yard games: 2002-04: 18 1999-01: 11 1996-98: 13 1992-95: 14 What a tremendous hire Tuberville made, bringing Chizik on board from UCF. Hopefully, we will be able to keep him on staff for another season. WDE
auee90 0
Nice breakdown. And I agree with your statement. Can you break it down back to the early 80's -- years when Pat Dye and our great defenses of the not-too-distant past stifled many offenses? AUloggerhead 1,829
Stat, Your numbers reveal the maddening thing I had while watching some of Tot's games. He didn't seem to care a lick about assembling a crushing D.

Average pts allowed per game: 1989-92: 18.2 1986-89: 9.8 1983-86: 15.6 Yards allowed per game: 1989-92: 288 1986-89: 262 1983-86: 303 400-yard games allowed: 1989-92: 5 1986-89: 1 1983-86: 6 10 pts or less games allowed: 1989-92: 10 1986-89: 23 1983-86: 14 30 pt games allowed: 1989-92: 5 1986-89: 1 1983-86: 4 Under 300-yard games allowed: 1989-92: 22 1986-89: 24 1983-86: 20 The defenses from 1986-1989 were some of the best in school history but it was also during a time period when most offenses in the SEC were run oriented. AURainman 6
It must be noted that we have dropped UF from our schedule since Chizik has been here. That may have shifted the numbers a bit!!!
StatTiger 3,086
It must be noted that we have dropped UF from our schedule since Chizik has been here. That may have shifted the numbers a bit!!! 115463[/snapback] Yes, we did drop UF but we also played USC in 2002 and 2003. The Trojans offense was just as prolific as a Spurrier offense averaging 449 yards per game in 2002 and 447 in 2003. Their passing game gained 3988yds & 33 TD's in 2002 and 3791yds & 39tds in 2003. Our defense played well enough for Auburn to win had we played better on offense. USC gained 386 yards in 2002 and 315 yards in 2003.
auee90 0
Thanks Stat, you do rock. Those number prove what I originally thought... we had some great D's back then. Yes, the other teams were run oriented, and that probably helped the stats look better. My four years were '86-'90. And they were some ausome football years. Here's how I remember it: - beat Bama all 4 years - ranked in the top 10 3 of the 4 years (top 20 I think the other year) - went to the Sugar Bowl 2 of the 4 years (of course, went bowling all 4)
autiger6 0
If Chizik stays around we will continue to have a great defense. The future looks bright although one person that I haven't heard mention is Coach Whitt Man doesn't he do a good job with the Backers. I think he has done as good and job as any this year. Gran has done a good job wih special teams also.
