NCAA Extends Dead Period....Again

This means no in person contact at AU or Spring evaluation visits by coaches. Recruits are not allowed to tour athletic venues. And for us fans it means no Big Cat Weekend for the 2nd year in a row.

Not good news but I’m much more confident in this staff’s ability to navigate the terms more successfully than our previous staff.

Why would they do this?  Is it a CV19 issue or just making things harder on colleges?

Cause democrats hate the University of Auburn!😁

Just making it harder for colleges of course!

Are you aware we're in the midst of a massive global pandemic?

Sucks for recruiting, but probably smart for public health

Your half right. It is absolutely moronic at this point to extend the dead period. We have played a full 10 game season with fans and a bowl season. Thousands of people can come to campus and it is not an issue, but we can't have 20-30 kids (they could even limit the number at any given time) on campus for recruiting? No. There are measures in place that worked great to have a season. This is utter BS.

Not sure the new staff would be doing the same thing and having a big cat weekend any way.  Every school has set up virtual tours of their facilities and every one is zooming with recruits.  The only real losers are the click bait pay sites that "VIP" articles that say so and so is on campus.

@auburnphan Disagree. The kids lose because they are not able to get the full experience that normally comes with an OV & meeting the coaches in person which they aren't allowed to do. Seeing something in Zoom & in person can be vastly different. Also while visiting campuses are allowed on their own dime there are a number of families that don't have the money to do that often.

You very well know that visiting the campus on their "own dime" is rarely if ever an issue for majority of Auburn recruits in the Southeast.  The recruits carpool, HS coaches take them, Summer ball coaches, friends of the family or "new" friends of the family take them if Auburn really wants them to visit.  If anything it saves Auburn from wasting money on guys just wanting a free trip, recruiting against and wasting the staffs time.  Are they missing out on some things? sure, but they are not missing out on what is needed to make a decision.  Maybe it is good for college football and the student athletes to not have these visits where they are glorified and instead get the needed information.

I actually don't very well know that.

That's true in some cases but I have no clue on how many.

Agree to disagree. I would need to see the campus & meet whoever I can in person to get a true feel.

Sorry, recruiting visits aren't deathly viable to programs ability to stay afloat.  Traveling and intermingling people isn't really advised right now.  better to just wait a few more months when we reach herd immunity levels through vaccinations.

Unfortunately this hurts Auburn and our staff.  But it's the right move

There aren't going to be many Official visits over the spring/Summer.  Most wait for games to get expenses paid/have a full experience.  I'd guess they'll extend the dead period again and probably do it through August and open everything back up once school starts.

One positive that might come of this is the fact that our "virtual" new football facility will be about the same as most others showing videos of theirs.  Even though it isn't built, both are images/video vs seeing it in person.

This hurts the prospective student athletes more than anyone. Coming from a softball perspective none of the 2022 class has been able to take even an unofficial visit.  Sure they may have been to camps pre-covid and seen the campus but thats basically it. My 2021 daughter's unoffical visits were a major part of her decision. You may think you want to go to this school or that school but once you get on campus things change. I am thankful she committed where she did and when she did.

I really hate she is missing out on her official visit and all that goes along with it.

You are right they don't happen in the spring. There was just an entire class of athletes around the country that never got to go on official visits. From the school and fan's perspective it isn't ideal but it is absolutely terrible from the athlete's side of things.

I definitely agree with you that it hurts the student and gives them less information to make what's probably their biggest decision to date.

Unfortunately everyone is making huge sacrifices right now.  Visiting a college is very low on the true needs during a global pandemic.

That same class of 2020...a lot of them are missing out on their freshman year of college.  My cousin in Atlanta is taking virtual classes from home vs going to school.  It's just kinda awful

Would be great to understand how risk is lower by “paying your own way”. Not very realistic to assume safety measures could not be in place to allow coach contact. Fully understand why some of the usual recruiting practice should be off the table but not meeting coaches.
