Look at who he hires for his campaigns and past white house administration for those around him. Trump hires women who have certain 'looks' and physical features he finds attractive. Kristi knew that and made an effort to make herself look as much like Melania as she could. From what I've read, it was working and she's on Trumps short list for VP.
