i was there! it was a lot of fun and incredibly packed. the librarians knew it was coming and anybody who didn't, got sucked into it and joined. it went from the main doors on the 2nd floor to past the main stairwells in the center. all of the windows were fogged up from the heat. only lasted about 10-15 minutes and afterwards the police and fire department showed up. on the facebook group there were over 3500 people confirmed attending, and many thousands more that were undecided or invited. tons of crowd surfing including a few guys in green/orange/blue suits, the burger king king, cowboys, banana suits, gumby, a guy in fighter pilot helmet and air mask. even aubie was there and went crowd surfing! what a great study break!

Students trade thinking caps for party hats at rave

Ed Enoch

Auburn University students put down their books and notes and picked up light sticks and beach balls for a half-hour rave at the Ralph B. Draughon Library on “dead day.”

Students took a study break to party with Aubie and other costumed characters, including Gumby. Students began gathering at about 11 p.m. Tuesday, and the rave lasted about 25 minutes.

“It was just absolutely packed,” said Bonnie MacEwan, AU’s dean of libraries.

Students, who organized the event via Facebook, spilled out the front doors, MacEwan said. She said it was hard to estimate the size of the crowd.

MacEwan said this was the first rave at the AU library, but that the “dead day” party break was a trend making its way across the nation’s college campuses.

“The first couple librarians were disconcerted,” she said.

But the events have been mostly positive, MacEwan added.

While most participated, some students chose to keep studying at the library or another location, she said. The staff helped those students navigate the party.

Chance Corbett, AU’s associate director of emergency management, said the university staff and Auburn police were on site in case anything happened.

Corbett said there were no reports of injuries or damaged property, but that a smoke detector did go off inexplicably as the rave ended.

MacEwan said the library was happy to host the event, which she said reinforced the building’s friendly atmosphere.

“It was fun for the students, a much-needed study break,” she said.
