New Hope (Ala.) running back Rudy Ford, another of Vanderbilt’s early commitments, said the “whole new image and vibe” Franklin and his staff are portraying has swayed recruits.

“It was rubbing off on me and got me real comfortable with my decision,” said Ford, who ran for more than 1,500 yards and 23 touchdowns as a junior. “I didn’t have to commit early because I was a top guy they wanted — and I thank them for that — but you commit early and you get to focus on your high school team.”

It didn’t take long for Franklin to address his top concern in this class. Johnathon McCrary of Cedar Grove (Ga.), the No. 2-rated dual-threat quarterback for the Class of 2013 according to Rivals.com, committed to Vanderbilt over Florida State, Georgia, Ohio State and others
