Spotlight on CAP - TAMU Game

Since the final bye-week the Auburn run-offense has moved to a higher level of performance. Auburn has averaged 337.0 YPG on the ground the last 3 games with Cameron Artis-Payne leading the charge with 175.3 YPG on 6.4 yards per attempt. The Florida offense was able to expose the Georgia defense with counter plays and their RB's bouncing outside to the edge. Auburn's buck-sweep will likely be a play we see often against the Bulldogs as Gus Malzahn attempts to establish his run-offense. Added to Malzahn's buck-sweep this season is the misdirection element of Ricardo Louis on the jet-sweep look. During the last 3 games, Louis has rushed for 168-yards on 9 carries, establishing himself as a major threat on the edge.

The play...

Auburn faces a 1st & 10 from the TAMU 34-yard line. Auburn elects to run their buck-sweep play with Ricardo Louis motioning into the backfield just before the snap on the jet-sweep look. This forces the defense to respect the wide side of the field because of Louis or Marshall keeping to that side. The MLB over top must freeze until CAP actually has the ball in hand.

Both guards (Danzey and Slade) pull to the right along with Brandon Fulse. Melvin Ray will seal the OLB as Fulse engages the DE on the boundary side. Cameron Artis-Payne sweeps right until a hole opens up between Fulse and Danzey. CAP darts through the hole out of the reach of the MLB. CAP motors down the side line for 34-yard touchdown.

The Bulldog defense struggled against basic run plays that often tipped off the point of attack before the ball was snapped. This is a good sign for the Auburn offense, which utilizes misdirection and multiple points of attack in their running game.

I think we matchup very well with UGA and hope we run roughshod over them like UF did. Now if we can keep Mason from picking apart our secondary, we'll be just fine stopping their run game. However....our run game.....Verne would be blushing if he was covering the game. WDE!

Based on both teams current trends in rushing vs. SEC competition, it projects UGA to rush for somewhere in the area of 179 to 222-yds and for Auburn to rush for 313 to 335-yards. Scary thought is that AU rushed for over 300-yards last year and the game still came down to the final seconds.
