Marsh won a total of ten national championships at Auburn. I think it was seven men's and three women's. Nobody's going to compare favorably to that. David Marsh is the most successful Auburn coach regardless of sport and he is arguably the most successful in the state of Alabama and the SEC, perhaps even the world. Marsh's 12 NCAA titles surpass the six won by football coach Bear Bryant at Alabama. Even breaking down the Men's and Women's titles separately, Marsh's seven men's titles beat Bryant. Marsh has won 17 SEC titles (13 men and 4 women), by far the most of any Auburn coach or team.

You look at that record and you just have to shake your head and wonder how JJ could have been so stupid to not keep him.

I’d put Umbach a close second: http://ashof.org/inductees/other/arnold-w-swede-umbach ”Beginning in 1946 and continuing for the next 27 years, Coach Umbach produced 25 championship teams in the Southeastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association. Umbach's Auburn Tigers won 249 dual meets, lost only 28, and tied five. During this period, he coached 127 conference champions and four national champions.”

It wasn't really a matter of JJ not keeping him. JJ was a reason he left to begin with.
