On that same play he had another guy opposite side of the field wide open on what looked like a seem IIRC. I also saw on that one pass to Hastings on a lil 7-8 yard out on the sideline, we had JSS Breaking Open across THE MIDDLE but Bo never saw him. Play worked out but would have been a bigger gain.

I said it in a different post, but I think being coerced into nothing but one reads dulls the QB's ability to scan the field

Agreed...but it was nice to see two guys breaking over the middle! Maybe Nix sees it and says Eff it and fires that puppy to JSS or whoever next time.

Bottom line is our 299-305 pound OL is not going to move anyone off the ball in order to look like the dominating veteran OL we all want to see and that we have been told we have all offseason.  They won't shine until the smoke and mirrors start in two weeks and even then they will struggle mightily on short yardage.

Quality post. At this point with 5 5th year seniors, we are who we are. Our O Line is a group of good kids with average SEC talent. They don't have to be world beaters. They just need to play with their maximum mean streak. At some point, they have to get tired of hearing about the offensive struggles, take ownership, and play with more aggression. If they do that, the sky is the limit for this team. I’m still waiting for them to come out and play like their hair is on fire in the first half. This week would be a great time to start that trend.

Can’t we just feed them a bunch of cheeseburgers? I’ll pitch in! I mean, I gained weight in college on cheeseburgers. I’ll throw in some pizza, too   😂😂😂

Clemson has the type of line we need to strive for considering their style of play. They average around 320.

My only comment on this...., they just are not that talented.

I hate to be the one to break this to you but the offensive line is going to  be a strength this season!

Left side of our o-line is definitely our stronger side. Even Kim in the middle has been at least consistent/solid this year. But that right side.. ugh..

Really in the A&M game it was RG that killed us. Every time we got hit for a loss or a sack I saw RG miss. I was calling for freshman to play. Probably an over reaction. JD looks ok at RT, not great but ok. If we can shore up that RG spot we will have a chance to be special I think. I am just happy to be 4-0 and seeing improvement.

Isn't it amazing how much better our offense is when the oline plays good. We are getting to the beat the crap out of Purdue Bowl game good on offense. Don't get me wrong, Bo Nix is doing well, but this oline is creating lanes, pulling linemen are getting on their man and the protection is holding up pretty good.

That has always been my main. qualm with CGM. If he can keep the oline playing at this level or better we will be beast mode level!

The problem with the OL is boxed in with the problems with this offense.  Our OL is light by todays standards.  Gus wants them that way because he wants them agile.  There lies the problem.  If you are going to run plays inside the tackles over and over and over again then you are asking your OL to do something that they physically can't do.

Every time I read something like this I think back to the Alabama vs. Nebraska games of the 70's. Nebraska had all those big corn fed boys on their offensive line...and the undersized Alabama DL ate them alive. And Nebraska had all those big corn fed boys on the DL too. And Alabama ate them alive.

Auburn is 5-0. The run game is holding its own and the passing game with Bo at QB is beginning to click. You wanna revisit your opinion from September or are you sticking with it? Just curious. :)

Fans, including myself, want an OL that can line up and blow inferior teams off of the ball and assert themselves and take over a game.  This will not happen under Gus with the type of player he is looking for.  When we play Texas A&M and the smoke and mirrors starts with this offense then you will see what many think is a much improved OL.  They will be improved because of the plays that Gus is calling.  We still will have trouble with short yardage situations just like always but we will be asking the OL to quickly get to the next level and seal the edges and they will look better.

Not really how I remember it in the 70's.

1978/09/02 Nebraska 3 - Alabama 20 L
1977/09/17 Nebraska 31 - Alabama 24 W
1972/01/01 Nebraska 38 - Alabama 6 W !! Orange Bowl

Nebraska almost always had a starting OL mostly made up of 5th year seniors....and it was standard practice to redshirt just about every lineman coming into the system.

Times have changed of course but I think OLs need to play as a unit and cohesion is gained through experience together.    I'm looking for our OL to get better as the year progresses...

Gus is doing a good job of keeping the D guessing and neutralizing aggressive defensive fronts.  For the second week in a row his playing calling helped out the OL.  Schwartz and a mobile QB plays a huge part in that.  People were complaining about the up the gut run calls in the Oregon and Tulane games, but it was Gus' typical early season poking and prodding to see what his team is capable of.  Bo is progressing rapidly...it seems like all we really need is for the team to stay healthy and for the D to step up it up another notch when we get to Amen Corner.
