  1. I doubt we're willing to offer enough to wrangle him free from MSU, but Mel Tucker's buyout is manageable. It's $95M if they fire him, $2M if he resigns. He's got a great resume with a good mix of college and NFL experience. Five years in the SEC working for dink and Smart, another five or so in the Big 10. And he knows how to work the portal. WDE!
  2. No idea if this is accurate, but I read he wanted access to our compliance files. Specific inquiries, as if he was looking for something he could use as leverage over certain boosters. Given that he was still employed by one of our biggest rivals, and being courted behind the scenes by the other, our athletic department considered it too much of a risk and refused. Even Dye, who had been promoting him pretty hard, cooled on the idea. Take it for what it's worth, which at this point is little more than a compelling story. WDE!
  3. Lmao, I was. I thought about letting it percolate for a bit then follow up with a crop duster gif but none of them captured what I wanted to convey. But they're right, I had enjoyed some brown water last night, which definitely contributed to my willingness to poke the bear. (Note to any whiskey drinkers in north Alabama, the Whiskeynaut at Straight to Ale is pretty tasty.) Payton will get a sweet TV gig and ride off into the sunset. Given their rapport, he would probably be a good compliment to Brees. Ryans needs a lot more seasoning, but he's on my radar. WDE!
  4. Pretty big news. I know we have a coach...and we all want CBH to succeed at Auburn...and we all, to varying degrees, support him...and...and...and..... But what if, as has been reported, CSP takes 2022 off to recharge...and we happen to be in the market for a coach...and he's still available..... We could do worse. Also, because it got buried in another thread that was subsequently locked, what do folks think about DeMeco Ryans? Rising star in the NFL, relatively young, Alabama native. If things went south for Harsin and we needed a new coach, would a former turd be popular enough with AU folks? For the record, I'm not writing off Harsin, I just like speculating as a fan, kind of like a HC keeping a list of potential assistants. WDE!
  5. Probably more splashy regionally than nationally, but how bad would Auburn and uat people freak out if we hired DeMeco Ryans? Making a name for himself in NFL coaching ranks and getting looks for HC jobs, especially if they win the Super Bowl. WDE! Edit: Current DC for the 49ers.
  6. A play or so before their final TD there was a batted ball by our DL. The ball hit the turf at just about the same spot Frost was standing when the ball was snapped. Not necessarily saying he was out of position, he had taken several steps forward to cover the RB, but it would have been awesome if he had Alex Lincoln-ed that ball to seal the win for AU. Here's another scenario: What if Deshaun Watson had flipped from Clemson to Auburn?? Jeremy Johnson doesn't happen. Maybe Clemson's rise doesn't happen, and it was AU instead. Or this: What if instead of hiring Dillingham, Malzahn got over himself and hired Kliff Kingsbury (and he didn't immediately interview for other jobs). WDE!
  7. It's definitely unique in professional sports. I think the last time they fired a coach was in the late 60's. WDE!
  8. Pittsburg Steelers coach, obviously, but I would also be fine with Pitt's DL coach. Karl Dunbar had a brief stint under dink at uat, which is his only experience in college coaching. Very good coach, but if memory serves, he didn't impress as a recruiter (not at uat levels, anyway) and they paired him with Tosh Lupoi to make up the difference. For what it's worth, Charlie Partridge is the AHC/DL coach at Pitt. Good mix of college and pro experience. Reputation as very strong coach and recruiter. Has been a HC before (FAU before Kiffin) and has also coordinated special teams. WDE!
  9. Back when I was in school we called that three. WDE!
  10. Thanks for the correction. I'm just happy I got the player/band right. WDE!
  11. Didn't Aairon Savage do something like that way back when? Not due to behavior, but played a few years and had a fairly catastrophic injury, redshirted, then hung around as a walk-on, then rejoined as a scholarship player? Something went sideways with his medical redshirt season or something, but a year later went back on scholarship. Ended up being on the roster for like six or seven years. Entirely possible I'm misremembering the situation...or player...or both. WDE!
  12. Several years ago Beck, McCartney and Dave Grohl were turned away from a rapper's Grammys afterparty (I don't mean to be dismissive, I just don't recall who it was...Lil Bow Wow, maybe). The three were a little surprised they couldn't slide in even though they weren't on the list, but they were good sports. Paul jokingly asked the doorman, "Just how VIP does someone need to be to get inside?" Then suggested to the other two that maybe one more hit record between them might have tipped the scale. Afterwards, when people were legitimately asking WTH, the host defended the decision, saying something like, "Party's for a new generation." WDE!
  13. I'm pretty sure it was the Spaceman, but I remember a RnR HOF induction when he got to the podium to speak, pulled out a piece of paper, then admitted he was going to have to wing it because he got drunk backstage and lost his readers. WDE!
  14. I guess that's a better job than position coach. I'm an NFL guy, so I looked at coaching staffs with no shot at the playoffs. Jags are at the top (or bottom, in this case) of the list. WDE!
  15. Probably wouldn't be my first choice, but Tosh Lupoi (Jags DL coach) might be looking for a job. SEC experience and a reputation as an elite recruiter. WDE!
  16. I've always wanted to get the real story about Jonah Williams' (2016 uat OL) recruitment. No idea if this is accurate, but according to one of my uat friends that claims to be in the know, Williams and his parents--both Auburn grads--were on an offseason campus tour when he was a rising HS junior or senior and stopped by the athletic department. Whichever staff members they talked to called JB Grimes and he wouldn't even drive over to meet them. Even after the visit he essentially said he didn't feel like recruiting a kid from California. JW wanted to move back to Alabama, and wanted to play at AU, but signed with uat instead. Started at tackle for a few years, finalist for some awards, first round pick, multi-year NFL starter...might have been nice to sign him. I think Bro Hamm was our highest-rated OL signee that year. Again, that's just the story I was told. WDE!
  17. That was a sad situation, but it made for some epic Halloween costumes a few months later. WDE!
  18. I hope he brings the Seahawks ST coordinator. WDE!
  19. I know, right? Want to join the effort to nudge it towards 80's cartoons?? WDE!
  20. Do you remember the time he escaped a Cobra maximum security cell by unscrewing a wall panel with his fingernail? Try as I might, I've never been able to replicate that move. WDE!
  21. I'm with you. This was a tremendous opportunity and it feels like Auburn got caught with the battery at 3%, looking for a charger. It kind of reminds me of when Chizik started the Tiger Trail, or whatever the bus thing was called. Jacobs was doing interviews, patting himself on the back, talking about how it was "Marketing 101." I was kind of embarrassed for him. He's the head of a multi-million dollar enterprise and he's talking about adopting concepts from an entry-level business class. Actually, is there even a Marketing 101? Seems like marketing classes would start in the 2-300's. WDE!
  22. I noticed while he was at Navy he coached quarterbacks, fullbacks and wide receivers. At a service academy, that might be one position group. I like it. WDE!
  23. It's times like this I wish I had kept that Wade Christopher pic. NOBODY out-Auburn-message-boards Doc Christopher. WDE!
  24. This is the story as I understand it. While at UF, Mullen and Meyer butted heads over Cam Newton. Mullen thought it was insane to start Tebow over Cam. When Cam left UF, Mullen basically told a few staffers to direct certain boosters to get Cam. They tried their darnedest, and apparently talked money with Cecil, but frankly, AU was a far better opportunity. Mullen knew his guys were dirty, and made the assumption Auburn was as well. Not much happened until it was obvious that Auburn with Cam was going to be very, very special. As it happens, Mullen's Director of Player Personnel, Jody Wright, someone that knew exactly what they had done, had just taken a job at.....uat. WDE!
