Both of Auburn’s golf teams are off to a good start to the 2012 spring season.

Coming off of a win at the U.S. Collegiate in October, Dominic Bozzelli opened the spring season with an 8-under-par performance last weekend at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. Bozzelli built his lead on the strength of a second-day 64. By pulling off the double, Bozzelli became the first golfer in Auburn history to win back-to-back tournaments.

For his efforts, Bozzelli was named the SEC Golfer of the Week. Right now, Bozzelli is ranked No. 5 in the Golfweek/Sagarin individual ratings.

On the women’s side of the coin, freshman Victoria Trapani shot a 3-under par over three rounds at the Red Tail Golf Club in Orlando, Fla., earlier in the week to help the No. 3 Auburn women’s golf team win the Central Florida Challenge to open the spring season.

Trapani’s win was the third time an Auburn golfer has finished atop the medalist’s standings this season. Both Carlie Yadlockzy and Marta Sanz won tournaments in the fall.

Tied with Baylor after the first two rounds at the Red Tail Golf Club, Auburn outlasted the No. 22 Bears with a final-round 294 on a windy, tough day at the course.

Central-Phenix City graduate Haley Wilson finished seventh at 1-over-par, and teammate Diana Fernandez also shot 1-over to give Auburn three golfers in the top seven.
