aubiefifty 16,823
Auburn's Casey Mize misses out on Golden Spikes Award Updated Jun 28, 6:04 PM; Posted Jun 28, 6:00 PM By Tom Green tgreen@al.com Casey Mize was a finalist for both the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy -- the two highest individual honors among amateur and college baseball players. After missing out on the Dick Howser Trophy a couple weeks ago, Mize came up short for the Golden Spikes Award on Thursday as California's Andrew Vaughn took home the award that is presented annually to the nation's top amateur baseball player. "Andrew Vaughn pieced together an unforgettable season at Cal this year and we are thrilled to honor his tremendous successes by naming him the forty-first USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award winner," Executive Director and CEO of USA Baseball Paul Seiler said in a release. "Andrew and his fellow Golden Spikes Award finalists are exceptional ambassadors for the game of amateur baseball and we are delighted to celebrate their accomplishments." Mize was among four finalists for the award, joining Vaughn, Texas slugger Kody Clemens and Florida ace Brady Singer, who took home the Dick Howser Trophy earlier this month in Omaha, Neb. Mize's road to No. 1 overall MLB Draft pick was 18 years in the making Auburn ace Casey Mize, the likely No. 1 draft pick, set a goal for himself at a young age and nothing has deterred him from it. Vaughn, a sophomore, was the Pac-12 Player of the Year this season after batting .402 on the year with a school-record-tying 23 home runs, a .531 on-base percentage and a whopping .819 slugging percentage, Mize, who earlier this week signed a contract with the Detroit Tigers -- who selected him first overall in the MLB Draft -- that included a $7.5 million signing bonus, went 10-6 as a junior with a 3.30 ERA while anchoring Auburn's weekend rotation and leading the team to a Super Regional for the second time in school history. Mize recorded 156 strikeouts and issued just 16 walks while holding opponents to a .201 batting average. He ranked third nationally in strikeouts, 16th in strikeouts per nine innings (12.24), fifth with a 9.75 strikeout-to-walk ratio, ninth with a .87 WHIP and 15th in walks allowed per nine innings (1.26). He also threw a no-hitter on March 9 against Northeastern and tied a program record with 15 strikeouts against Vanderbilt on May 4. Tom Green is an Auburn beat reporter for Alabama Media Group.
