The spring game will be the first opportunity for Auburn fans to see their team in Year 2 under Hugh Freeze. The Tigers have made some big additions in the transfer portal this offseason. Auburn also signed the nation’s No. 10 recruiting class from the high school ranks in 2024, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

Freeze and Auburn will be hoping to take a big step forward next year. Auburn went 6-7 in Freeze’s first year at the helm. Auburn is set to return key players such as quarterback Payton Thorne and running back Jarquez Hunter as well.

This was not Auburn’s only announcement of the day. The Tigers also announced their completed defensive coaching staff on Friday. Freeze made multiple new hires for his defensive staff this offseason.

Auburn will begin spring practice on Feb. 27.

After serving as a defensive line analyst over the past season at Auburn, Hugh Freeze names Vontrell King-Williams the defensive tackles coach of the Tigers. King-Williams also served alongside Freeze at Liberty.

Within Auburn’s defensive staff, numerous position assignments have been made. Defensive Coordinator DJ Durkin will oversee the linebackers, Co-Defensive Coordinator Charles Kelly will oversee the safeties, Wesley McGriff will coach the cornerbacks, and Josh Aldridge will coach the defensive edge unit.

“I’m super grateful for the opportunity given to me by Coach Freeze and Coach Durkin,” King-Williams said. “I believe in what we are building here at Auburn and can’t wait to continue to positively impact the lives of our student-athletes. War Eagle!”

During the 2023 season at Auburn King-Williams assisted with the defensive line unit. Before coming to Auburn King-Williams was the defensive tackles coach at Eastern Michigan University for  a season after serving as a defensive graduate assistant at Liberty for two seasons.

“Vontrell is an incredibly hard worker, passionate about his craft, and earned the respect of his players during his time with me at Auburn and Liberty,” Freeze said. “He has a tremendous upside and reminds me of the likes of Jeremy Garrett, Tray Scott and Freddie Roach, who have all worked for me early in their careers.”

King-Williams got his start in coaching at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) as a defensive line intern after playing there in 2015-16.

Vontrell King-Williams has been officially promoted to the defensive tackles coach job at Auburn according to a press release from the school Friday, confirming previous reports from Rivals and 247Sports on Wednesday.

King-Williams was an analyst on Auburn’s staff in the 2023 season and previously worked under head coach Hugh Freeze at Liberty.

King-Williams takes the place of Jeremy Garrett, who reportedly took a job with the Jacksonville Jaguars but has not been officially announced yet.

Garrett was in charge of the full defensive line. King-Williams being announced as the defensive tackles coach has meant some shuffling among Auburn’s defensive staff.

Josh Aldridge, who coached the linebackers in 2023, will now coach the edge rushers. Defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin will be assigned the inside linebackers. Co-defensive coordinator Charles Kelly will coach the safeties and Wesley McGriff will coach the cornerbacks.

Auburn’s staff is once again full heading into spring practices and the 2024 season. Any changes going forward would be from the departure of a current staff member. Below is Auburn’s full staff as of Feb. 9.

  • Head coach: Hugh Freeze:
  • Offensive coordinator: Derrick Nix
  • Defensive coordinator: D.J. Durkin
  • Co-defensive coordinator: Charles Kelly
  • Quarterbacks coach: Kent Austin
  • Running backs coach: Derrick Nix
  • Wide receivers coach: Marcus Davis
  • Tight ends coach: Ben Aigamaua
  • Offensive line coach: Jake Thornton
  • Defensive tackles coach: Vontrell King-Williams
  • Edge rushers coach: Josh Aldridge
  • Linebackers coach: D.J. Durkin
  • Cornerbacks coach: Wesley McGriff
  • Safeties coach: Charles Kelly

Kent Austin, who was promoted to Auburn’s quarterbacks coach from his previous role as an analyst, will receive a $150,000 raise as part of his new contract, according to a copy of the agreement acquired by AL.com in a public records request.

His salary for the 2024 season will be $400,000. The new deal began on Jan. 15 and will expire on Jan. 27, 2027.

Austin’s previous contract, which expired on Jan. 31, paid him a $250,000 base salary and did not include any endorsement rights payment or personal appearances fee. The new contract owes him $75,000 in endorsements and $75,000 in personal appearances payments, totaling the $150,000 raise.

Should Austin remain at Auburn, he will receive a $200,000 raise on Feb. 1, 2025, and another $350,000 raise on Feb. 1, 2026, bringing the potential total salary of his contract to $950,000 for the 2026 season.

The contract includes a fully guaranteed buyout for the remaining money owed to him during the term of the deal.

Should Austin choose to leave Auburn, he will owe $375,000 should he do so before Dec. 20, 2024, $250,000 should he do so before Dec. 20, 2025, or $125,000 should he do so before Dec. 20, 2026.

Though Austin will not owe Auburn anything should he accept a new position as a head coach, a play-calling coordinator or any job in the NFL, according to the terms of the contract.

Austin receives an identical bonus structure to what is owed to other assistants according to contracts previously acquired by AL.com.

Austin was head coach Hugh Freeze’s co-offensive coordinator at Liberty from 2019-2022. He was also the offensive coordinator at Ole Miss from 2008-2009 — with Auburn offensive coordaintor Derrick Nix on that staff.
