Auburn Mediocrity

AMEN!

The Administration is scared to shine light on anything negative, like they choose to shield the Family from just how crappy some of the athletic teams have become.

My response to your above post is in no way negatively directed at you Cameron.

I informed my kids early on that I would pay 100% of their education but I would NOT subsidize stupidity.  I feel exactly the same way about Auburn Athletics.

We've all watched the Auburn Administration make one stupid decision after another and they've systematically wasted well over $100million in just 3 yrs buying out football staffers year after year after year.  Firing head coaches, coordinators, position coaches, support staff while we alum and fans all watched the 3-peat losing seasons circle the drain.   Auburn Athletics are not good stewards of the finances and the BOT have been enablers to the administrators who have made one poor choice after another.

We as a family, choose to financially support AU Academics and it will stay that way.

Jerry,

I completely understand your position.  I might even agree with you, but here’s my reservation. If everyone had that same attitude, then how do we ever get better if the athletic department isn’t being supported? I agree that our leadership has made terrible decisions. But choosing not to support the athletic department isn’t holding the leadership accountable, it’s only putting AUBURN further and further behind. The question is how do we hold the leadership accountable and make sure our money is being used wisely?

With NIL - I believe Auburn fans have an opportunity - now more than ever before - to directly impact the product in the field. The more money we generate, then the better players we will have and the better chance to win a National Championship in something other than equestrian. I don’t believe it’s possible for them to use NIL money on coaches buyouts or other stupid decisions we’ve made in the past.

Lol, your unicorn view of nil is exactly the type the scammers are looking for.

pay more and more and we will win! How many ex Auburn players have already entered the portal this year?

Better head to the casinos, you will have a better return on the money thrown away. Oh Auburn Athletics is on the line , they need another 500 dollars, please.

Auburn already generates athletic revenues among the very top in the country. Auburn has one of the richest athletic departments in the country. Championships? Well, basketball SEC but NCAA? Golf? SEC (go tigers!). How much money did they receive from the athletic department and NIL? Equestrian? SEC. Nationals nope. But that's not even an NCAA sport.

I fail to see how dumping more and more and more dollars into the athletic department is going to win more championships.

I donate annually to the academic programs that I studied in during my years at Auburn. I no longer donate to mediocrity.

Better get used to it , oh wait we already are.

this will be the new normal for the majority of teams except the top 15- maybe 20.

I agree with you. I didn’t graduate AU, my father did in ‘67, so I was raised an AU fan. I understand, but can’t stand the NIL. A full ride for these players means nothing anymore. AU will never reach the pinnacle again with this new Super Conference. I find it hard to watch College ball anymore with the portal nut-show and the pay me pay me attitude. Yes, I’m older, but the game for me, my opinion only, has been ruined and I find myself less and less interested with each passing season. It’s quite pathetic in my opinion, but I’m not a wealthy booster or anything more than a long time fan of the sport in general. I’ve always loved the NFL, secondly to College, but there is much less difference now, except for the top contracts. In the end I will always be an AU fan, but Fall Saturdays are no longer at the top of my list.

Yep. I can see the trend already. HF lost to both of them his first year. Definitely a trend setter.

As per my OP, I am not thrilled with the total mediocrity of Auburn sports. Yes, there are exceptions -- golf, equestrian, men's basketball, um ...?

But Auburn is pulling in sports revenue that is among the very top in the country. As pointed out previously, it is NOT going to the various athletic programs.

As for NIL, well, that is mostly going to FB and some to men's basketball. As for NIL to other sports, well, let me count the dimes on my fingers.

With Texas and Oklahoma coming in, and Bama and UGA and TN and LSU actually competing for dominance in the SEC and Nationally, welp, Auburn ain't there. Auburn is in the mid-pack for FB and BB and not even competitive in gymnastics, Track & Field, Swimming & Diving, all Women's sports,

Where are we?

As long as “this stuff” doesn’t pull AU team off the field, I assume I will be watching. “This stuff “ helps determine who will play, but not “ if we will play”. I am not giving up my love for watching CFB!!

If Alabama voters pass the gambling legislation this fall, that should help the partial scholarship sports. I don't see it affecting NIL or the full scholarship sports very much.

It will surprise me greatly, if they get a bill passed by both House and Senate.

And as long as the States on every side of Alabama and the Creeks pump money to just enough of our stalwart politicians in the House and the Senate......they never will pass a bill . The reconciliation bills will fall 'just a bit outside' of the time to get it done. But they got close this year!

Rinse, Repeat, next year.

Oh, and they will blame the Baptist and Church folks. 70+ % of who would vote for it if able. This game was old 20 years ago.

Auburn is historically a top 15 football team. I'm willing to bet the NIL money for the football program is at least in the top 20. We are not some poverty program and we need to quit acting like one.

The problem is we hire coaches no one else wants. And then we act surprised when they suck.

Get the right coach in here and AU is easily a top 10-20 football program. With a chance to win at all if we go on a run at the right time in the 12 team playoff.

That’s the big question and from the look of things so far, I’m not so sure. I fear a lot of teams are going to be forced to readjust their traditional view of where they stand due to NIL making everything purely about booster dollars.

I believe we have the right coach now.  We lost 2 years on the Harsin debacle but Freeze is getting stuff done and has significantly upgraded the roster. Once the wins start coming this year, things will be even better.

The harsh truth is that we don’t have our pick of the litter when it comes to coaches. For the exact same reason Tennessee doesn’t—remember, Heupel got worse each year at UCF, they just got incredibly lucky that somehow against all logic and reason he has *so far* worked out.

If Potato had stayed 2023 would have been Chad Morris level bad. It was the year where all the neglect of the roster that admittedly started under Gus came home to roost. Jury is out on Freeze but I can def see a path to success under him.
