Auburn CB Tyler Scott withdraws from transfer portal

Jason Caldwell

4–5 minutes

Auburn's Tyler Scott is staying with the Tigers.

Auburn redshirt freshman cornerback Tyler Scott entered the transfer portal earlier this week, but has since changed his mind. Scott confirmed to Auburn Undercover on Thursday morning that he has withdrawn his name and will remain on the Plains.

Scott, a former 4-star recruit from Mableton, Georgia, appeared in one game last season. He repped at nickel and cornerback this spring and is expected to compete for playing time at both spots.

Auburn has had four outgoing players enter the transfer portal this spring, edge rusher Brenton Williams, receiver Jay Fair, linebacker Wesley Steiner and cornerback Colton Hood. The Tigers have added four players since the conclusion of spring practice, Penn State wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith, edge rusher Keyron Crawford (Arkansas State), nose tackle Isaiah Raikes (USC), Philip Blidi (Indiana).

Auburn depth chart impact: WR KeAndre Lambert-Smith

One of the more highly touted transfer additions for Auburn in recent years

In a year where improvement was an absolute necessity, Auburn's passing game just leveled up in a big way.

The Tigers have added a major playmaker in the form of the No. 2 wide receiver on the transfer portal market, and 247Sports' No. 7 available player: KeAndre Lambert-Smith, the former Penn State receiver who committed to Auburn over Texas A&M on Wednesday, adding to a huge week for the Tigers in the portal.

Lambert-Smith, the Nittany Lions' leading receiver last season who was set to be the top returning wideout in the Big Ten by production, is Auburn's fourth transfer pickup of the week — and of the spring portal window — and the third transfer receiver for the Tigers this offseason, joining Robert Lewis (Georgia State) and Sam Jackson V (Cal).

A grad transfer entering his final season of eligibility, Lambert-Smith — a former 4-star recruit from Norfolk, Virginia — is coming off a career-best year at Penn State, snaring 53 passes for 673 yards and four touchdowns. Lambert-Smith, who had six combined catches in two matchups against Auburn, brings more than 1,700 career receiving yards and 11 touchdowns as likely the finishing touch to a revamped Tigers receiving corps that continues to garner excitement this offseason.

After entering the transfer portal last week, Lambert-Smith visited Auburn and later narrowed his finalists down to the Tigers and Texas A&M. Currently, 247Sports ranks Lambert-Smith as the No. 2 receiver in the spring portal window — only behind Houston's Sam Brown who was also an Auburn target — and the No. 13 transfer receiver overall in 2024.

Wide receiver was Auburn's biggest transfer priority on the offensive side of the ball after the conclusion of spring practice, searching for an experienced player from the Power Five level to complement a room that appears much improved, but also felt it was one puzzle piece away from completion.

The Tigers now have that and more with Lambert-Smith, one of the more highly touted transfer pickups for the program over the past few seasons.

With a productive and talented veteran added to the fold, let's take a look at Auburn's personnel in the receiving corps moving into the summer, and break down how Lambert-Smith fits into the Tigers' makeover at the position.

Four-star safety eyeing a visit to Auburn

Taylor Jones

~2 minutes

Auburn is in the mix to land a four-star defensive back from Maryland and hopes to schedule an official visit before his scheduled commitment date in July.

Tariq Hayer, a four-star safety from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, has locked in four official visits and hopes Auburn will be his fifth according to a report by Chad Simmons of On3. Hayer will visit Cincinnati in May and stop by Maryland, Michigan State, and Rutgers in June before his tentative commitment date of July 4.

Hayer mentioned to Simmons in a recent interview that Auburn and the other four schools he plans to visit have recruited him heavily.

“I really don’t have a top school,” Hayer said. “They are all on top. Each school recruits me hard, but Rutgers is probably recruiting me the heaviest. They check in every day, but all five schools are coming hard.”

Hayer is a four-star rated safety by all four major recruiting outlets. He is the No. 2 overall recruit from Washington, DC, and is a top-20 safety according to On3, 247Sports, and ESPN. According to On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine, Maryland has an edge with a 29.7% forecast, followed by Penn State and Cincinnati. Zero Crystal Ball predictions have been filed in favor of Hayer by 247Sports writers.

Auburn's Transfer Portal Class Is Exactly What It Needed

Zac Blackerby

2–3 minutes

It has been a good week for Auburn football.

In this story:

This week has gone about as good as it possibly could have for the Auburn Tigers.

The Auburn Tigers had clear needs entering the spring transfer window - defensive line, buck, and another wide receiver. Hugh Freeze and the Auburn coaching staff took care of all of those needs in back-to-back-to-back days.

The addition of former Indiana and Texas Tech defensive lineman Philip Blidi got Auburn's week off in a positive light. Then the back-to-back commitments from defensive lineman Isaiah Raikes and buck linebacker Keyron Crawford solidified a defensive front that needed to be bolstered with some depth.

Freeze and the staff also closed on KeAndre Lambert-Smith, the top wide receiver in the transfer portal. The addition of Lambert-Smith comes a few days after Auburn slot receiver Jay Fair entered the transfer portal.

The addition of Lambert-Smith is a bigger deal than just adding another talented wide recevier. It sent a message that Auburn can be a threat to land anyone that they target. It seemed like Lambert-Smith was trending to Texas A&M Wednesday morning but an announcement never came. As they day went on, more and more chatter emerged as it seemed like there was a changing of the tide in Auburn's favor.

Obviously, that's what happened and the Auburn Tigers added depth and potential starters at the thinnest positions on the roster in a three day span.

Lambert-Smith was rated as a 4-star transfer and was the No. 62 player as well as the No. 9 wide receiver in the portal according to On3.

As a recruit, Lambert-Smith was a 4-star prospect with a 91.85 rating according to On3. He was the No. 193 player nationally, the No. 63 wide receiver, and the No. 4 player in the state of Virginia.

Auburn beats out Texas A&M for impact WR out of transfer portal

Andrew Olson | 1 day ago

3–4 minutes

Auburn has made a big pickup in the transfer portal to give its wide receiver room a boost this fall.

Penn State transfer wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith took to social media on Wednesday to announce his commitment to Auburn. Lambert-Smith was also considering Texas A&M ahead of his big commitment announcement.

What the Tigers get in Lambert-Smith

Lambert-Smith brings veteran production to Auburn’s wide receiver room. He played 9 games as a true freshman in 2020. The season does not count against his eligibility due to COVID-19, allowing him to be a fifth-year “super senior” with the Tigers in 2024.

Last season, Lambert-Smith was the leading pass-catcher for a Penn State squad that won 10 games and went to a New Year’s Six bowl. The 2023 season was the most productive of his career.

Lambert-Smith logged 53 receptions for 673 yards and 4 touchdowns last season, career-highs in catches and yardage. Auburn did not have a pass-catcher top 400 yards in 2023. Tight end Rivaldo Fairweather had 38 catches for 394 yards. Ja’Varrius Johnson led AU wideouts with 19 catches for 347 yards.

Lambert-Smith started particularly hot with 4 catches for 123 yards in Penn State’s season-opening win over West Virginia. Things were a bit up-and-down for Lambert-Smith in 2023. He came up just shy of 100 yards two more times, going for 96 and 95 yards in back-to-back contests against Indiana and Maryland.

After the Maryland game, however, Lambert-Smith finished 2023 on a cold streak. He had 6 receiving yards against Michigan and 22 against Michigan State, but put goose eggs against Rutgers and Ole Miss.

Over his career, Lambert-Smith has 126 catches for 1,721 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Tigers add portal receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith from Penn State

3–4 minutes

Hugh Freeze and his staff left spring practices with the ambition of adding an experienced receiver to a room filled with promising talent and transfers that simply lacks snaps at the power conference level.

With Penn State graduate transfer KeAndre Lambert-Smith’s announced commitment to the program Wednesday evening, the Tigers seemed to have accomplished their goal.

Transferring with one year of eligibility remaining, Lambert-Smith comes to the Plains after playing 48 games for the Nittany Lions averaging 13.7 yards per catch over his four seasons.

Prior to committing to Auburn over Texas A&M, Lambert-Smith was set to be the Big Ten’s leading returning wideout after 673 yards receiving in 2023 – over 275 more yards receiving than any individual Tiger last season.

The Norfolk, VA native has been a weapon for James Franklin’s offense over the last four seasons. Lambert-Smith has posted three career touchdown receptions of 70 plus yards and owns 20 catches that have gone for 20 plus yards.

Lambert-Smith, the only player in Penn State history with multiple 80-yard receptions, notably posted an 88-yard touchdown catch from Sean Clifford in the Rose Bowl Game victory over Utah – the fourth longest passing play in program history.

During his senior season in State College, PA, Lambert-Smith more than doubled his reception total from the 2022 season with 53 last season – which ranked fifth in the Big Ten.

Standing at 6-foot-1 and 188-pounds, Lambert-Smith has racked up 1,598 career receiving yards on 116 receptions at Penn State.

In Lambert-Smith’s two appearances against his now current team, the wideout had just two receptions for 16 yards receiving inside of Jordan-Hare Stadium in 2022, but did, however, complete a pass to Sean Clifford during a second quarter trick play for 25 yards. During the 2021 clash, Lambert-Smith had 27 yards receiving on four receptions.

Lambert-Smith will link up with veteran transfers Robert Lewis, from Georgia State, and Sam Jackson V, from Cal, to lead Auburn’s young receiver room of Cam Coleman, Perry Thompson, Bryce Cain and Malcolm Simmons in the Tigers’ passing attack in 2024.

Auburn lands top available transfer wide receiver Keandre Lambert-Smith

Josiah Elmore

1–2 minutes

AUBURN, Ala. (WHNT) — Hugh Freeze has gone to the transfer portal again — This time landing the top available transfer receiver available, according to On3 Sports.

Kenadre Lambert-Smith, a Penn State transfer, committed to the Tigers Wednesday after reportedly visiting the program late last week.

Lambert-Smith is another talented addition to what has become a complete overhaul at the wide receiver position for Auburn. The Tigers signed the No. 2 high school receiver in the country Cam Coleman, and 4-star prospects Perry Thompson, Bryce Cain and Malcolm Simmons.

In addition to the high school commits, the Tigers brought in University of California transfer Samuel Jackson and Georgia State transfer Robert Lewis.

Lambert-Smith hauled in 126 catches for 1,721 yards and 11 touchdowns over his four-year career with the Nittany Lions.

The Tigers lost wide receivers Javirous Johnson, Jay Fair, Omari Kelly, Malcom Johnson Jr and Jyaire Shorter to the transfer portal this offseason.

CB Tyler Scott reportedly returning to Auburn after flirting with transfer portal

Auburn Football

Reports: Auburn CB Tyler Scott backpedals away from transfer portal, will return to The Plains

After reportedly beginning the process to enter his name into the transfer portal Wednesday, Auburn cornerback Tyler Scott has reportedly changed his mind, On3 Sports’ Justin Hokanson reported Thursday morning.

Scott, who is set to be a redshirt freshman in 2024, saw limited action in his first season on The Plains as he appeared in five games and totaled just two tackles.

However, during Auburn’s recent spring camp, Scott was among those who saw their stock rise with what Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze called a “really solid camp.” Kayin Lee, another young cornerback in Auburn’s secondary, told reporters in March that he’d seen “a lot of growth” from Scott.

A former 4-star prospect out of Pebblebrook High School in Mableton, Ga., Scott chose Auburn over the likes of Alabama, Louisville, Michigan, Tennessee, Texas and others.

With Scott now expected to stay put at Auburn, he joins a secondary that’ll be looking to replace a healthy handful of starters as former Auburn defensive backs DJ James, Nehemiah Pritchett, Zion Puckett and Jaylin Simpson are all hoping to hear their names called during the 2024 NFL Draft.

Auburn is also expected to lose redshirt freshman corner Colton Hood, who reportedly entered the transfer portal on the same day as Scott.

In effort to remedy those departures, the Tigers have added Alabama transfer Antonio Kite, Texas transfer Jerrin Thompson and JUCO transfer Laquan Robinson, as well as a slew of freshmen DBs.

The Denver Broncos selected Oregon quarterback Bo Nix at No. 12 in the NFL Draft on Thursday night.

The first-round pick was a standout at Pinson Valley High School. Nix also played at Auburn in the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons before transferring to Oregon.

Nix finished third in the voting for the 2023 Heisman Trophy behind LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, who won the award, and Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr.

During the 2023 season, Nix set an NCAA FBS single-season record by completing 77.45 percent of his passes as he set school records with 4,508 passing yards and 45 touchdown passes for Oregon.

With 16,965 yards of total offense in his career, Nix ranks second in NCAA FBS history. He also ranks second with 152 total touchdowns (113 passing, 38 rushing and one receiving), sixth with 15,352 passing yards and seventh with 1,286 completions.

During his three seasons at Auburn, Nix completed 628-of-1,057 passes for 7,251 yards with 39 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. In two seasons at Oregon, Nix competed 658-of-879 passes for 8,101 yards with 74 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

At Pinson Valley, Nix led the Indians to consecutive AHSAA Class 6A championships. In 2017, Pinson Valley swept through 15 games without a loss, including a 31-10 victory over Wetumpka in the state-title game. In 2018, the Indians bounced back from a 52-14 loss to two-time defending 7A champ Hoover in the season-opening game to win the remainder of their contests, including a 26-17 victory over Saraland in the 6A championship game.

Nix set AHSAA career records for yards of total offense and touchdown responsibility while at Pinson Valley, where he played for his father, Patrick Nix.

Bo Nix was an All-State selection in 2017 and 2018. In his senior season, he also was selected as Alabama’s Mr. Football and the Class 6A Back of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

Oregon’s Bo Nix was the sixth quarterback picked in the NFL Draft on Thursday night. The Denver Broncos, who picked him, were happy he was.

“This is the night where everyone says, ‘We got our guy,’” Broncos coach Sean Payton said. “I told (general manager) George (Paton), ‘I think we’re in position right where we’re at. Shoot, I could fly out there today and be the first one when we’re on the clock to knock on his door and make sure he knew that we were the one. But then I thought that might be a little difficult if something happened. I’d be in Birmingham, Alabama, and all of sudden, we have to divert the plane somewhere, so we stayed put. But we’re glad it worked out the way it did.”

A former Pinson Valley High School standout who played his first three college seasons at Auburn, Nix went to Denver with the 12th selection in the first round.

Paton said the Broncos liked all the quarterbacks who were drafted in the first round – Southern Cal’s Caleb Williams at No. 1 by the Chicago Bears, LSU’s Jayden Daniels at No. 2 by the Washington Commanders, North Carolina’s Drake Maye at No. 3 by the New England Patriots, Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. at No. 8 by the Atlanta Falcons and Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy at No. 10 by the Minnesota Vikings.

But the general manager and coach settled on Nix as a good fit for the Broncos pretty quickly, they said.

“Once we knew this was our target,” Payton said, “every time Chase Daniel got on or Dan Orlovsky or anyone, ‘He’s perfect for …’ I’m like, ‘Shhh! Will you be quiet.’ …

“We did our best to talk about other players and directions. It’s difficult sometimes. You don’t want everyone to know this is the player, but I saw what you guys saw, and I would cringe and George would cringe.”

The Broncos released starting quarterback Russell Wilson in March because of his massive contract. That left former Auburn standout Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci as the Denver quarterbacks. Stidham started the final two games of the 2023 season as the Broncos prepared for their offseason decision on Wilson.

Last week, Denver traded with the New York Jets for quarterback Zach Wilson. The No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Wilson’s tenure in New York had gone badly enough that the Jets were willing to pay half of his 2024 salary to move him to Denver.

“These guys are all going to compete,” Payton said. “… Bill (Parcells) taught me a long time ago: Let’s just let them play. We got to maximize the reps that we have and let them develop. And that stuff will sort itself out.”

Nix said he knew he isn’t promised the starting job in Denver even though he is a first-round pick.

“I know everybody has to compete,” Nix said. “I know everyone has to go to work. We haven’t had any conversations thus far, just draft prep and, obviously, the recent draft-pick (call). Other than that, I just can’t wait to get around the locker room, can’t wait to get around the guys, meeting my new teammates, meeting new coaches and get to work.”

Nix said he also recognized his compatibility with Denver’s offense.

“I think when you look at their offense, when you look at the scheme, a lot of really fun concepts that I’ve run in the past, a lot of fun things that I’ve been able to do and have success in,” Nix said. “We were able to just talk over those and communicate those. I believe just talking football is one of the best things you can do in the process, and that’s what we did a lot of.”

Former Auburn OL to enter transfer portal after stepping away from football in 2023

Published: Apr. 25, 2024, 10:14 a.m.

~2 minutes

After spending the 2023 season away from football, former Auburn offensive lineman Garner Langlo is looking to make a return to the sport.

However, Langlo won’t be making that return with the Tigers as On3 Sports’ Pete Nakos reported the former Tiger has entered his name into the transfer portal.

Langlo’s decision to transfer comes after he reportedly separated from the team in mid-August of 2023. That same week, Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze said Langlo had decided to step away from football.

Prior to his departure, Langlo, who was a redshirt sophomore at the time, spent fall camp getting second-team reps at the left tackle spot.

A former 3-star offensive lineman prospect out of Trinity Catholic High School in Ocala, Fla., Langlo will look to transfer having never played a snap for the Tigers.

During his recruitment, Langlo also hauled in offers from the likes of Baylor, Duke, Florida State, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Missouri, Ole Miss, UCF and others as a member of the class of 2021.

Former Auburn and Oregon quarterback Bo Nix was selected with the 12th overall pick by the Denver Broncos during the 2024 NFL draft tonight. Nix’s new NFL jersey is available now on the Fanatics website with free shipping.

Get Bo Nix's Denver Bronco's NFL jersey at Fanatics.Fanatics

Bo Nix started his first three collegiate seasons with the Auburn Tigers, but transferred to the Oregon Ducks for his final two years. Nix posted decent statistics as the starting quarterback for the Tigers, but his numbers took a tremendous leap after playing with the Ducks in 2022 and 2023.

During his final collegiate season, Nix became a candidate for the Heisman Trophy, throwing for 45 touchdowns and only three interceptions this past season at Oregon. Despite his older age compared to most other prospects in the 2024 NFL draft, the Broncos trusted him enough to take him in the top half of the first round. Nix was the sixth quarterback to be selected in the first 12 picks, leaving very few choices at the position for later rounds.

During each of Nix’s two seasons with the Ducks, he posted a completion percentage greater than 70%. Last season, his completion percentage reached 77.4%. That incredible statistic was enough to tie the NCAA record for highest completion percentage in a season, equaling that of former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones who posted the same figures during the 2020 season.

Fans can purchase Nix’s new NFL jersey on the Fanatics website and obtain free shipping with the “24SHIP” discount code at checkout.
