Johnson may not play again

KNOXVILLE — Defensive tackle Justin Harrell's return to the practice field was almost overshadowed by the return of another injured Tennessee player.

Defensive back Inky Johnson, who underwent surgery to repair torn blood vessels in his right-shoulder area, was released from UT Medical Center and visited Haslam Field on Wednesday to speak to his teammates.

"That was one of the best feelings in the world," receiver Robert Meachem said. "You have one of your brothers come back from something a lot of people can't come back from, just to come out there and show his face and show he still loves the game. ...

"He's just loving life right now. He's not happy with what's going on with his arm, but he's still happy with life because he knows everything happens for a reason."

Unlike Harrell, Johnson won't play again this season. And he might not play again at all. The hints that Johnson's career might be over were less subtle on Wednesday.

"Whatever he does in life, he'll be very successful at it," Coach Phillip Fulmer said.

Said Meachem: "They told us he might not ever get to play again. It makes you want to break down in tears."

Still, with Johnson back at practice and Harrell preparing to play again, the Vols were in good spirits.

"It's a great lift for us," Fulmer said. "I haven't had a day quite like this one."

At least they didn't have to amputate - which I had heard was a possibility for a while. Hopefully he has a full and speedy recovery. Thanks for the update.
