He said people who oppose the Machine, a secretive coalition of traditionally white greek organizations credited with helping elect Walker, may use it against him.

WTH!? Racism at uat? Say it ain't so. I can't believe they actually put that in the column!

RB is a good guy. Sucks for him that happened but its been more than 2 months. I'm sure singing our fight song felt like enough punishment for him.

RB is a classic Bammer Frat Brat who was elected in front of 4 other more qualified canidates. Here the election system is run like the Kremlin, the only way you're going to win an election into SGA is if you are a Greek. This past election(in which Walker was elected) there were 3 other canidates better than him but the problem was that one of them was black and the other two were not in the Greek system.

But I will say he sang War Eagle rather well :roflol:

I can't speak for campus today, but when I was in school at Auburn it was VERY different. Our president my Senior year (2002) was Brandon Riddick-Seals, an independant black student who was involved in many aspects of campus life. I've known Brandon for a very long time, and I believe he's one of the finest SGA Presidents Auburn has had.

Now ask yourself, if Brandon had gone to Alabama, do you think he'd have even had a shot at winning the SGA Presidency? Not a chance in hell, unless he managed to somehow get in to a Machine-Sponsored Fraternity (which most if not all black frats aren't).

The difference is night and day.

okay, it is different. but my point is that sga is dominated by greeks, and outsiders are not recieved very well. I don't know if any of you remember the guy from mobile who was elected a few years ago who wasn't greek. SGA is pointless anyways, unless you want it on your resume.

I was born and raised in Dallas County(focal point of the Civil Rights) and I have never been in a place with so much racial tension as there is on this campus in west Alabama.

SGA is actually a great tool if you have someone in office that will take charge. Think about the concept of SGA for a minute... Students voices being expressed in important university meetings.

A reference to the racial slurs painted on the front steps of Reese Phiffer? If so, there's no guarantee a student did that. Also, I know the people (white, by the way) that immediately went and washed it off the steps and columns. There was also a silent rally on the steps that joined both blacks and whites in response to the graffiti.

If you think there is more racial tension in Tuscaloosa than Selma, you're fooling yourself. I can think of several incidents in Selma -- Rose Sanders' goal to be the Jesse Jackson of the state, the Nathan Bedford Forrest housing projects, the bitter Smitherman v. Perkins mayoral race of several years ago. To say that there is more tension at UA is simply untrue. I've never experienced or witness racial discrimination during my time here. I know many blacks that are involved in SGA and hold important positions throughout campus. Just because certain fraternities require their members to vote for a certain candidate, certainly does not mean that this campus has racial tension.

I'd really like to hear your experiences.

The all black frats float this year? Homecoming Ying Yang vs. Country artist winner take quad incident? do these incidents qualify as creating an enviornment of racial tension?

You need to do your homework on my hometown and my uncle(Joe Smitherman) a little more before you try and talk Selma politics.

All black frat floats are not out of the ordinary. As with Auburn, Alabama has separate fraternities. That's a debate of its own, yet, the idea of separate floats is very common.

I will give you the Homecoming concert riff. Although, do you really think that an artist that repeatedly dropped the F bomb should be allowed on the Quad -- a place and event engineered to family entertainment. I remember being a small kid and going to those concerts. If my parents had known that foul language would be used in every lyric, we wouldn't have gone. Wouldn't have matter if it was the Ying Yang Twins or Bocephus, either... Elementary school children shouldn't be exposed to that. The ones who made an issue out of that NON-ISSUE were a very vocal, albeit confused, minority. I would estimate that 5% of the school agreed that YY should be allowed on the Quad. Hardly the German shepherds in the street, billy clubs in the air, and raging fire hoses atmosphere you're trying to create.

I don't mean to slam your uncle, and I'm not going to argue with you over if he was a racist or not. If you want to believe his use of "Martin Luther Coon" was a slip of the tongue, then feel free to. If he had a road to Damascus experience on integration, then more power to him. However, his time as Selma mayor was FILLED with racial tension, regardless of whether held racist beliefs or not.

One isolated issue with very little support doesn't stand up against Selma's daily throwdowns. Walk into Faya Ora Rose Toure's "alternative school" and tell me what you think.

With all that said, I love going to Selma. Beautiful downtown with lots of history. I went to last year's bridge crossing ceremony, in fact. Love the St. James Hotel, too...

When I refered to the float I was talking about the fact that it was vandalized while all the other frat floats were left untouched.

I went to school with a guy named Royce Cuhn(pronounced COON) he was the grandson of a Selma Bail bondsman by the name of Martin Cuhn who was a life-long friend of my uncle. Can you see where the mistake could have been made? My uncle was a politician plain and simple. He played his cards to get elected and re-elected. Take a look at Selma during his years and after, you'll see a major change for the worse in economics and racism.

I never said Selma was a racial utopia but I was merely saying that the tension of competeing races at ua is far more evident than in Selma(no competition in Selma any longer).
