Artists or Hype Moguls

Mick Jager once said Madonna was "ten cents of talent and a million dollars worth of ambition." I think B Spears is about a nickel worth of talent. Yet they keep their careers going by Lesbo Kissing and Nudity. A real artist would be an artist even when the money ran out. Today, the music industry has these canned produced acts like N'Sync, BSB, 98Degrees, En Vogue, Expose, etc.

Now we have Ms Jackson having to get naked to sell some albums too. Whatever happened to "Let's wait a while?"

Is the entire industry just turning into hype whores? Would a rapper that has no talent sell a cd w/o all the naked women in the videos shaking their rears?

You are so right DKW. Yes, it all comes back to the dollar and marketing to the MTV crowd. There is that segment of society that slam you for feeling that way. You are close minded if you don't want to see,(or don't want your daughter to see) a lesbian act on TV in prime time.

This may stray off your topic but the events at half time of the SB point out the hypocracy of our media/networks when it comes to art/entertainment and making a dollar. CBS cried out about Timberlake's and Jackson's stunt not being anywhere in line with the networks moral stance and values. All the while, during the same program, CBS ran commercials depicting a dog biting a guy in the man- marbles, a horse firing off a cheesy blaster in a girl's face, a monkey asking a girl to go upstairs and have sex along with numerous ads telling men how to keep morning wood for up to 36 hours.

Art/entertainment has become whatever sells.

Good point. I had not thought of it from that perspective.

Unfortunately, that is very true. Artists are/were supposed to be in it for the sake of the art. Today, it is about the $$$. We have what I call recipe movies. Ex. Guy and Girl meet, they hate each other at first. Then they discover thatthey really like each other. They fall in love. They get married. The End. I could not count the number of times you have seen that same movie made over and over. 'When Harry Met Sally', 'You got Mail', and too many others to list.

It is no longer about "art" or entertainment. It is about making a movie, a TV series, action figures, computer game, a restaurant tie-in, and possibly a sweepstakes too. Star Wars, Star Trek, Batman, Rugrats, Laura Croft, Chicken Run, Ninja Turtles........ETC ad nauseum. Maybe they will have some class with LOTR.

We dont get a great movie anymore, we get a 'pornish' rip-off of special effects that basically has no message or script. "Matrix, Terminator movies, Gone in 60 Seconds, Smokey and the Bandit, Death Race 2000, Torque, Fast and Furious."

Go back and think about the best movie you ever saw. It is well written and acted, not maketed. "To Kill a Mockingbird, In Harms Way, Patton, many more."

Kind of a shame really...
