Auburn baseball: Tigers on verge of clinching SEC West

Need to take two of three at Mississippi

AUBURN, Ala. — For the first few years of his Auburn career, the biggest thing first baseman Hunter Morris played for during the final regular-season series was pride.

That the No. 16 Tigers (36-17, 17-10 SEC) have a chance to win the SEC West with a strong showing at Mississippi is a welcome change.

“It’s nice to be going into the last weekend of the year and really be playing for something,” Morris said. “It’s a bigger goal. It’s winner takes all. It’s going to be exciting.”

Auburn already has punched its SEC tournament ticket for the first time since 2003, but plenty is on the line in Oxford, Miss., the next three days.

The Tigers lead Mississippi and Arkansas by one game in the SEC West standings, meaning two wins against the No. 17 Rebels (36-17, 16-11) would give them at least a share of their first division title since 1995.

But much more is at stake. Auburn will try to solidify its seeding in next week’s SEC tournament in Hoover, Ala. The Tigers are third behind South Carolina and Florida and could distinguish themselves from a pack of SEC teams in the running to host an NCAA regional two weeks from now.

BM also has a free update on Drew Pomeranz (Mississippi's starting pitcher Thursday) posted...

Pomeranz brings the heat for Rebels

By Bryan Matthews, Senior Writer

Hunter Morris has been facing Drew Pomeranz fastballs since he was 12 years old. Of course, back in those carefree days of little league and travel baseball, Pomeranz wasn’t bringing near the 92-plus velocity on his heater that Morris and the rest of Auburn’s team will see Thursday night.

“He’s got great stuff,” Morris said.

Pomeranz has carved up the SEC during his junior season, leading the conference in ERA (2.15), strikeouts (121 in 79.2 innings) and opponent’s batting average (.176).

With an overpowering fastball and above average curve and breaking pitch on a 6-foot-5, 231-pound frame, the left-hander has everything the pro scouts are looking for in this June’s MLB Draft.

ESPN’s Keith Law ranks Pomeranz as the No. 3 overall prospect. MLB.com projects the Arizona Diamondbacks to select Pomeranz with the No. 6 pick in the first round.

Ole Miss is being very aggressive against Luckie tonight. Hardly taking any pitches.

Strikeout, but ball gets away from catcher and runner makes it to 2nd base.
