SECCountry interview after AU visit & offer

Quote

AUBURN, Ala. — Master Teague III stepped into Gus Malzahn’s office Tuedsay without an Auburn offer. He exited with one.

The 4-star 2018 running back from Murfreesboro, Tenn., made a mid-week visit to the Plains to spend some time with the Auburn coaching staff. Teague toured campus with Tim Horton and Herb Hand. Once he met with Malzahn, Teague’s pleasure with his visit — already a great one — skyrocketed.

“I got to talk with coach Malzahn in his office. He said that he liked my film and that I was the top of running back they wanted,” Teague told SEC Country.

I am blessed to receive a scholarship offer from Auburn University today. #SEC Thanks @CoachGusMalzahn @CoachTimHorton and @CoachHand

This was Teague’s first visit to Auburn, but it certainly won’t be his last.

The 5-foot-11, 210-pound running back plans to return to an Auburn spring practice, which begins in a week. Teague enjoyed the facilities on this initial trip.

But mostly, Teague was glad he had a chance to get to know the coaches better.

“It was great. All the coaches seemed to be the type of men that I would like to be coached by,” Teague said. “Auburn runs the same offense that we run at my high school. So that’s a nice fit. The campus is very nice, as well.”

In a similar offense, Teague finished his junior season with 2,059 yards and 24 touchdowns despite missing two games with a concussion.

That level of production ranks Teague as the No. 19 running back and the No. 320 overall prospect in the country. Teague’s offer sheet is beginning to pile up. In 2016, Teague received offers from South Carolina, Louisville, Middle Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Memphis, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss and Kentucky. Other Power 5 programs have followed suit in 2017, including Auburn.

Teague hasn’t narrowed down his decision yet, citing that he “hopes to have a list soon.” South Carolina and Tennessee are the likely leaders based on the follow-the-visits detective work. He has been a regular visitor in Knoxville and Columbia. Since he expects to return to Auburn soon, that should be considered good news for the Tigers.

Teague wants to finalize his college choice before the 2017 season begins.

“I hope to make a decision toward the end of the summer so I can focus on my team and the season,” Teague said.

No way he is 210 pounds.

He's got big thighs. Could be close to it.

Those are some real highlights but his competition looked weak

He's playing against the top competition in Tennessee. Blackman is in 6a and they made it to the 3rd round of the playoffs with some early season losses. I bet those losses came due to Master Ts concussion.

Wow, so many good RB prospects this year.  It must be challenging for the coaches to rank who they want the most.  It may come down to first ones to decide they want to play for Auburn.

The top competition in Tennessee consists of a few teams around Nashville regardless of the classification. The defenses he went against would get destroyed if they were in Alabama 6A.

Lingard is & was #1 on the staff's list and they have not given up yet even though he's committed to Miami. Chances of a flip are long though.

He has some guns on him, he looks like he lives in the weight room. He could be 210, a solid 210. :jossun:

Whatever his weight, he's definitely got a great build for an RB from what little you can tell in those pics. He actually looks like a Malzahn/Horton prototype to me.

What I want to know is how are we going to make room for all of the running backs that we want from this class?

We are taking 3 total. There's room.

Why 3?  Pettway will be gone, but I expect KJ back as well as KMart, Miller, and Barrett. I can see 2, but to me, 3 is overkill for a position that features 1 maybe 2 players. JMO

Gus always takes one back that can be converted into a slot. Not sure which one of the ones we're currently looking at on our board fills that bill, however. The most likely scenario I see is taking Joiner and converting him to primarily a TE who also serves as a short yardage specialist.

Agree. Just passing on the numbers. And Alaric too if he stays at RB.

My guess is that we want to take all of them, we just have room for 2-3 of them.  After all, whichever ones we don't take, we will likely be playing against.

Joiner will be a WR before a TE.

You think? Chip seems to be a BIG fan of tight ends... and that seems like a natural transition for a power back.

Respectfully likely an incorrect guess. Some offers are to get the foot in the door with a kid in case other things fall through. I imagine that's more likely what some of the RB offers are for.
