There was talk in Port Arthur this Summer that KMart was encouraged to watch film of KJ and try and be a more patient runner.

That's not who he was and it's not who he should be. He should've been encouraged to watch film of Kenny Irons.

To me, KJ is very similar in style to Bell. While KMart is very similar to his cousin, Jamaal Charles

If that’s true then my bad but most coaches don’t try to change running style except maybe being more physical.  KJ didn’t have great leg drive but was strong up top and could twist his way for and extra yard or 2.  That goes a long way on down and distance.  It’s good to see the coaches praise KMart for getting back to his old self.

This offense still needs a thumper in a running back to get most of the carries

No worries. A good friend of mine that I used to work under is now the DC at PAM. He is the one that told me about it when Kam was home this summer

Maybe he gets back to being Kam like in the USM game and not try to be KJ

Watching him Saturday he looked so much more comfortable. Kinda a react and stop thinking so much type of thing.

That was the gist of his interview.

That was the KM I was high on pre-season (and late last season).

Cadillac is as clear of a #2 as Bo is #1.

Well, this is an opinion poll but......I don’t think it’s clear at all if you watched Fullwood and Brooks in person (or Tucker Fredrickson on film). I loved Caddy but I honestly didn’t think he was better than Kenny Irons, just more hyped. With the run of Caddy, Ronny, and Kenny I felt pretty good about the guys toting the rock for a few years there.

Not saying there is no place for him. Just don't think he is that physical every down back like Kerrion that could punish people and make them think I don't want anything to do with tackling this guy. He is more suited for a Mccaleb type role used to have. It's time to give our bigger backs a chance to be our rb1 and just let Kmart have his smaller role. I just wish Gus had sense enough to realize once again that plan A sux and it's time to move to plan B.

I'm gonna predict it now.  With Boobee hurt, Gus is about to ride KMart like the pony express, but he ain't gonna change ponies.

Kam Martin more assertive as he returns to 'his style' at running back

By Tom Green tgreen@al.com
Kam Martin spent the offseason trying to be more like the player he was set to replace.

While training back home in Texas with his cousin, former NFL running back Jamaal Charles, the three-time All-Pro told Martin to "slow it down a little bit." So, Martin, known for his speed and ability to quickly hit a hole, began studying more film of his predecessor, Kerryon Johnson.

During Johnson's three seasons on the Plains, he developed a patient running style that was most often compared to Pittsburgh Steelers running back Leveon Bell. Martin wanted to be more like them.

"KJ was extremely patient, one of the more patient backs we've ever had," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. "Each back has their own style."

As much as he tried, however, that wasn't Martin's style.

After leading Auburn in rushing in the season opener against Washington, Martin's touches in the backfield decreased the following three games, as he at times appeared hesitant with the ball while Boobee Whitlow staked his claim as the Tigers' featured back. Then, in the second quarter of last week's Southern Miss game, Whitlow went down with a shoulder injury, and Martin's number was called to carry the load.

The junior finished the game with a career-high 24 carries, churning out 90 hard-earned yards in an otherwise ugly offensive performance for Auburn. While it was far from Martin's career-high in yards, it may have been his most complete performance, stepping up when Auburn really needed him.

"He ran with a passion," Malzahn said. "The game was on the line, and you could really tell that he was trying to will himself and will that offense to win. That was real impressive."

Martin rushed for 44 yards in the fourth quarter alone, including all 19 of the Tigers' yards on their late field-goal drive that iced the game with 2 minutes to play.

"I ran hard," Martin said. "I got a lot of bull yards, yards after contact. Like I said, I have to keep getting better. Just keep getting better."

Part of Martin's success against Southern Miss was a return to his natural running style. Instead of trying to be more patient like Johnson was, Martin was quicker with his decision-making and committed to hitting the holes without hesitation.

"He bombed it, he hit it," Malzahn said. "He went through some pretty small seams, kept his feet moving. So, Kam's a very solid back, and like I said, I was very impressed with him Saturday."

The biggest difference in Martin's effort, according to offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, was the running backs assertiveness and physicality -- returning to "his style" of running.

That could be needed again Saturday when No. 8 Auburn travels to Starkville, Miss., to take on Mississippi State at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN2, especially if the Tigers are without their leading rusher Whitlow, who has not been full speed in practice this week. If that's the case, Malzahn said Martin will be the first running back on the field against the Bulldogs as the Tigers aim for their first road win of the season.

"We've got a lot of confidence in him," Malzahn said. "If you saw him last week, he ran with a passion and with a will, especially when the game was on the line, and protected the football. We were very impressed with his performance last week."

I’d put Ronnie and Caddy and 2 & 3. Disappointed that nobody has mentioned Ben Tate. I feel like he did the most with the least support. I’d rank Mason lower as he had huge holes to run through in 2013.

Thag said, I’ll be honest, I only really started following football in college. I grew up in a non-football family. I don’t know many of the earlier players.

I certainly dont have the history to comment on this but if we were doing a top 10 potential list, I would love to see Jovon's list somewhere on that. His underrated bag of spins and slight jukes, great initial burst speed, soft hands and tough running was some of the best I can remember seeing before KJ came along. Mainly just the sudden change attributes

As someone who suffered through 10.5 of the 12 2012 games, Tre was an excellent tough guy runner with almost no holes. Id say him, Emory, Jonathon Wallace and Phillip when he wasnt hurt were the only offensive players of note really. He didnt excel at too much but he wasnt bad at anything particularly. Couldve been a better pass blocker but thats more because of his frame

Always wonder how Dyar and Pettway could have turned out had they stayed out of trouble. I loved watching them run.

Only ranking ones I’ve watched play....

Can't really rate those I never got to watch. So for me, it goes...

Fullwood

Irons

Brown

Mason

Caddy

Bostic

Davis

McCalleb

Danley

Tate

My favorite behind Bo is Kenny Irons, but Fullwood was a better back.  Similar styles, but Fullwood had that next gear.

Damn, I would pretty much go exactly this...I was a big Stephen Davis fan back then so maybe I would put him a tad higher but agree with the rest.

I hope Gus rewards him with more carries. Unfortunately, that's not a given.

If Whitlow can't go, it's more than a given.  It's an irrefutable law of nature.

Fullwood, Brooks, and Carnell are the only ones remotely that can even sniff Bo.

I would tend to agree, but feel many of us haven't given Tre Mason the due he deserves. That guy was special. His stamina, as Gus ran him over, and over again was amazing. I found myself at times afraid he would just collapse on the field.

5. Kerryon Johnson

8. Ben Tate

9. Rudi Johnson

10. Stephen Davis

Having Stephen Davis as #10 is a travesty. He would of won us a Heisman had Bowden actually let him run all game. He would tear it up for a half, then Bowden would do something else. If Stephen Davis had actually played all game every game, I truly believe he would of won us a Heisman

I feel the same way about Mike Dyer. Dude was a baller. Had he kept his head on straight, he likely breaks Bos all time record.
